Students of one California high school teacher will have to adjust to a lot more than just their school schedule after the upcoming spring break concludes. Veteran teacher Gary Sconce is reportedly completing his gender reassignment surgery during the hiatus and will return as Karen Adell Scot.
According to local media, the science teacher, 56, began his transformation almost a year ago after reportedly feeling like he was supposed to be female since he was a child. He is apparently so anxious to complete his journey that he cannot wait until the end of the school year.
Sconce said he suffers from gender dysphoria, which he claims he cannot control.
“People say it’s like a mental illness but it’s not,” he said, later confirming that he has suffered great losses during his transformation. “Who would choose that?”
While many would concede that it should be his right to pursue whatever body modification he chooses, the impact of his reveal next month will doubtlessly result in undue confusion for at least some of his students. According to the school district, state law effectively ties its hands in the matter, forcing them to subject students to this bizarre display of gender fluidity.
Yosemite Unified School District sent a letter to parents informing them that: “Effective Aprill 22, 2014, Mr. Sconce will become Ms. Karen Adell Scott for purposes of District employment.”
The district said it realizes the process “may raise questions” among students and the community as a whole and will offer counseling to those who request it.
Sconce initially contacted the district with his own letter, announcing his intention to return to his job as his “real self,” requesting protection from “verbal abuse by some who will not see my changes as positive but as someone to be feared or mocked.”
He went on to ask administrators to “join me in celebrating” the cosmetic surgery, explaining he will be glad to answer questions asked in a “dignified way.”
While Sconce seemed happy to finally look more like a woman, he lamented the fact that he has lost his wife, family, friends, church, and house as a result. In the end, however, despite his insistence otherwise, it is ultimately his choice to undergo this procedure.
His students, on the other hand, have no choice but to go along for the ride.
