Residents of Saginaw County, Mich. could soon find themselves confronted by a behemoth best suited for the war-torn streets of Afghanistan. According to Sheriff William Federspiel, his department recently obtained a Mine Resistant Ambush Proof (MRAP) vehicle straight from the U.S. Army.
Those already wary of encroaching totalitarianism might find the acquisition unsettling; however, Federspiel said the monster will remain caged until it is needed.
“I honestly never want to use this vehicle,” he explained, “because if I have to use it, that means something awfully bad has happened.”
The truck can withstand .50 caliber rounds, he added, lamenting the fact that authorities are “constantly outgunned” by civilians.
As its name implies, the cabin of this vehicle is impervious to anti-tank mines. It contains its own internal atmosphere, is resistant to heat, and weighs a staggering 18 tons. While officials claim the MRAP could be used to help fight fires and respond to other disasters, the applications for such an asset are obviously much wider.
Federspiel attempted to assuage the concerns of those who worry about the possibility of a police state.
“I’m not going to let that happen,” he insisted, explaining he is “sworn to uphold” the Constitution.
“For the people thinking the federal government is going to give it to us and one day flip a switch and it’s ‘robot Federalist reporting for duty’ – that’s not going to happen,” he said.
He concluded that “we live in a time where people and groups want to see Americans die” and that the inclusion of such an intimidating vehicle might “deter some type of attack.”
Still, the fact that he felt it necessary to address concerns of despotism is a troubling sign.
Millions of Americans are worried about the perceived increase in excessive force by police across the nation. A corresponding push by leftist politicians to disarm law-abiding citizens only adds fuel to the conspiratorial fire.
