This is what gun control activists don't understand; take guns away from ordinary citizens and the criminals will still have them. Why? Simple. They're criminals. They have no intention of abiding by the law. They have their ways of obtaining firearms. Buying illegal weapons? Doesn't mean a thing to them. It's a weapon. If they can obtain it through some underground means, they'll do it without any questions asked. Then there's the second part of the equation: security groups like Homeland Security. They could be armed with semi-automatic or automatic weapons and just shoot people for no reason, then just make up an excuse. Even worse is if Obama gets reelected and cements his position as a dictator. He could piss off all kinds of people from all over but they couldn't touch him because his forces will have all the weapons. An uprising would be futile at that point. Heck, even before then, he'll just start rounding up masses of people on his list and they wouldn't be able to resist because they wont have any means of defense. I live in Costa Rica Cent.Amer. My home was invaded by 5 Ninja/commando types dressed in Black- wearing ski masks, all armed with 9 mm pistols and most turned out to be wearing bullet-proof vests. If I had not had a 9 mm in my lower floor level to run to get as They kicked in my large wooden door after breaking my steel outer gate with crow bars I might not be here to tell the story. I DID HAVE A GUN!!! As one culprit stuck my hall closet door where I had run in to get my weapon . The others were still coming down the staircase as I opened the door putting 2 rounds into his chest and commenced firing on those on the staircase. When the police finally showed up the one I shot first was found dead inside by broken front door still holding his9 mm hammer cocked back in his right hand with 3 rounds in him the last one while he ran up the stairs. The spent bullets that hit the proof jackets of others tell the rest of the story. When citizens are unarmed only the criminals and those in power call the shots pun intended.

I have lived in or around Manchester, England all my adult life and feel proud to live in a country with among the strictest gun controls in the world. After the Dunblane shootings in 1996, which were committed by a registered gun club member all private ownership of handguns was made illegal. The UK has a homicide rate of 15 per million, compared to 63 per million in the states. Firearm deaths are uncommon enough to always make the national television news. I spent my teenage years in Evanston, Illinois 1966-1973 and of the ten suspects shot dead by police nine of the ten had been black.
We discourage the use of firearms by having tough sentencing for the use of a firearm in the commission of an offence. A first offence gets would normally get a tariff of ten years and a second offence means a life sentence. But for any offence one becomes eligible for parole after one has served half the sentence and there would normally have to be bad disciplinary reasons to deny parole at the first application. Most murders would expect to be out in ten to twenty years. There are only 34 LWOP prisoners convicted of murder and one multiple rapist LWOP in the whole of the UK. We don't clog up our prisons with 25 years to life shoplifters,or possession or dealing in drugs like in California.
Despite this we still have the highest prison population in Western Europe 124 per 100,000 compared to 576 per hundred thousand in USA.

In UK we do not feel a need for a second amendment as we generally would not need to defend ourselves from gunmen. We leave it to the courts to pass sentence.
Late as the response might be, I could not resist. It is great that the UK has minimal crime. As for our 2nd amendment, it is there to protect ourselves against the government as we did in 1776.
