Thanksgiving: A Distinctly Christian Holiday

The force that founded America was spiritual, indeed evangelistic. Landing at Jamestown in 1607 Pastor Robert Hunt erected a cross, took communion, and covenanted, “We do hereby Dedicate this Land, and ourselves, to reach the People within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to raise up Godly generations after us, and with these generations take the Kingdom of God to all the earth. May this Covenant of Dedication remain to all generations, as long as this earth remains, and may this Land, along with England, be Evangelist to the World.” In 1620 — blown off course, but not off mission — Mayflower Compact, “…for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith.”

The Pilgrims “advanced significantly the Bible’s message that God’s kingdom is irrupting into the world for his glory and our good.” –Dr. Bruce K. Waltke, “An Old Testament Theology.”

As the nation survived and became independent, the Founders established America legally as a Christian nation at the state level, rather than the Federal (details here).

What America needs is a covenant renewal, a return to the Founders stated mission. Dr. Waltke says that “Anything that threatens the loyalty to I AM, such as the Canaanites [Secularism] without, or as pride within [American Exceptionalism], must be eliminated. Loyalty to I AM has such a high value that anything that threatens it must be eliminated.”

American education was Christian — producing literate, exceptional, and virtuous people — the Judeo Christian educational model focused on shaping the character, and the Greek model on content and shaping the mind. Christian education shaped the heart, its character, and virtue.

Restoring Christian education is a matter of life-and-death. Solomon said that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge”. A.W. Pink said “It is a most profitable exercise for the soul to be often engaged in contemplating the Divine attributes, pondering God’s all-mighty power, ineffable holiness, unimpeachable veracity, exact justice, absolute faithfulness and terrible severity. Christ Himself has bidden us ‘Fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.’”

It can be stated without dispute — mark this down — that the husbandry of educating America’s children of the last 3-4 generations has been appalling; the false god of secularism has failed America. Instead of developing Christian character, secularism has dispersed the sacraments of that pagan religion and indoctrinated America’s children and culture with a false, dead religion. The sweet Psalmist of Israel said “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither- whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.”

Here is their character [wicked] — intrinsically worthless, dead, unserviceable, without substance, and easily carried away.” –Charles H. Spurgeon, The Treasury of David.

America’s Founders — Christians — a biblically literate people, laid a biblical foundation “that it may go well with you” and “that you may prolong your days in the land which the I AM your God gives you.” (Deuteronomy 6:24) Morality and virtue are key components of freedom.

“You have turned from your founders and their vision of lasting freedom, and from the deeply held Jewish, Christian and classical beliefs that made their vision both necessary and possible. You have turned to alternative visions of freedom that are seductive but lazy-minded and empty, and are now proving disastrous. And all the time you are turning yourselves into caricatures of your original freedom in ways that are alternatively fascinating and repellent to the world.”

The plain fact is that no free and lasting civilization anywhere in history has so far been built on atheist foundations. –Os Guinness, A Free People’s Suicide

To argue that America’s Founders were not Christians — and the foundation laid was not upon Christ Jesus — is at best ignorant, and at worst dishonest. And also part of the “…tumult of the people against the Lord’s anointed, the determinate purpose of God to exalt His own son, and the ultimate reign of that Son over all His enemies.” (Spurgeon)

The false god of secularism, the cousin of paganism, has tried to kill King Jesus for 2,000 years. “A vain thing – In Spain, two monumental pillars were raised, on which were written: I) ‘Diocletian Jovian Maximian Herculeus Caesares Augusti, for having extended the Roman Empire in the east and the west, and for having extinguished the name of Christians, who brought the Republic to ruin.’ II) ‘Diocletian Jovian Maximian Herculeus Caesares Augusti, for having adopted Galerius in the east, for having everywhere abolished the superstition of Christ, for having extended the worship of the gods.’ A modern writer elegantly observed: “We have here a monument raised by Paganism, over the grave of its vanquished foe, but in this `the people imagined a vain thing;’ Neither in Spain, nor elsewhere, can be pointed out the burial place of Christianity; ‘it is not, for the living have no tomb’.” (Spurgeon)

If you can spare one, lift a prayer to the Lord on America’s behalf this Thanksgiving; ask Him for mercy and forgiveness to what we Christians have allowed to happen to America in our lifetime.

In God’s unchanging order, if America is to be saved, it will be done by those with Faith. God never sends the new recruits to the front line, but the battle scarred veteran.

Will a Gideon or Rahab the Harlot — with an ounce of faith — please stand.
