As new wrinkles continue to emerge in the ongoing IRS scandal, Republican legislators are ramping up their collective demand for answers. Two House committees took turns grilling IRS Commissioner John Koskinen over the agency’s allegation that countless emails relevant to the congressional investigation were lost in a 2011 hard drive crash.
This latest controversy is only the latest issue to surface in a scandal involving the improper targeting of conservative groups ahead of the 2010 and 2012 election cycles.
According to a National Review report, Senate Republicans are expanding their interest in the case, led by the efforts of Tea Party-backed Sen. Ted Cruz.
The conservative Texan is reportedly taking a firm position, imploring the Justice Department to launch a comprehensive investigation of the IRS scandal.

A Cruz aide noted that the senator is “going to say if Attorney General [Eric] Holder does not appoint a special prosecutor, he should be impeached.”
The inside source continued, noting that Holder “has been at the center of every big scandal in this administration,” adding that should he refuse to act in this scandal, “it’s perfectly appropriate for him to be impeached.”
This is not the first time Cruz has flirted with the possibility of impeachment. In addition to listing dozens of acts he feels should lead to hearings against Barack Obama, he publicly advocated for Holder’s impeachment earlier this year. That effort has been renewed, however, in light of the latest developments.
Specifically, he wants an investigation to focus on former IRS official Lois Lerner’s suggestion that Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley should be audited based on the contents of a misdelivered email.
Democrats, on the other hand, continue working to corroborate the agency’s talking points regarding issues including the allegedly lost emails.
As House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi asserted, the brewing controversy only suggests to her that “they need a new technology system at the IRS.”
