Rallying The Right

Pat Toomey Rallying the Right

Following the defeat of 2012, it seems as if everyone – yours truly included – has an opinion about where the conservative movement goes from here. But right now presents an excellent opportunity to rally the Right again.

Following the fiscal cliff fiasco, the next big battle inside the beltway will be the debt ceiling in March. Some Republicans who caved on the fiscal cliff are already talking tough. Take Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey, for example. After voting for the largest tax increase in 20 years, Toomey is one of several Republicans now saying that the debt ceiling showdown may require a government shutdown if Democrats insist on more tax increases.

So with some key Republicans already throwing down the gauntlet, now is the time for the conservative movement to re-assert itself. The time for the licking of wounds has past. The time for leadership has arrived. We’re at our best when we let our principles lead the way. The two times I can remember the right-of-center coalition of evangelicals, conservative Catholics, libertarians, and the pro-growth/limited taxation crowd being truly unified since the 2004 election were the 2010 midterm elections and Scott Walker’s recall in Wisconsin last year.

Why?

Because those elections were clearly about principles, and principles unite us. Unlike Democrats who join that party out of identity politics, we become Republicans because of principles like the ones found in the party platform.

And the Republican Party platform is clear about two things: the rule of law has the obligation to protect the God-given right to life, and the government big enough to give you everything you need is large enough to take away everything you have. We have been struggling for a message that puts both of these principles into practice simultaneously. One that bypasses the in-fighting plaguing our movement for years now and mobilizes and energizes our grassroots to go on offense. The debt ceiling showdown provides us that opportunity.

Planned Parenthood received more than $542 million from the government last year, which means that an astounding 45% of its revenue came from the American taxpayer. Every one of us would agree that is simply inexcusable. Some of us may believe that based simply on the sanctity of life, given that Planned Parenthood is one of the leading child killers in America. Some of us may believe that’s simply a terrible waste of the people’s money at a time we’re flat broke and a symbol of our misplaced priorities. Both of us recognize that Planned Parenthood is one of the Left’s major political fundraisers. Regardless of the premise, we all come to the same conclusion.

Thus, now is the time for all of us to use this issue as a catalyst that unifies our various factions behind a shared principle—absolutely no increase in the debt ceiling should even be considered until all money for the child-killing industry is removed from the budget.

If we’re going to consider these things “private moral matters” then it is intolerable to ask the taxpayer to subsidize it, especially at a time when we’re flat broke and taxes are going up on everybody. If we wouldn’t ask the taxpayers to buy your next shot of tequila, jolt of trans-fats, or drag from a cigarette, then we shouldn’t ask them to buy your next condom or abortion. If someone wants to get their freak on, they can buy their own birth control pills or dental dams.

This week on my radio show, Dr. Thomas Woods, one of the most respected libertarian thinkers in the country, agreed with me. “Even if you’re a pro-abortion libertarian you don’t believe the taxpayer should be funding it,” Woods said.

If we cannot get Republicans to hold the line on this at this crucial time in our history, then there really is no point to having a Republican Party (or at the very least to having these Republicans). If the conservative movement isn’t willing to take the lead in forcing their hand, then there really is no point to our movement other than selling books and syndicating radio shows like my own. This is an easy first step to re-unify for the much bigger and longer battles that await us to return to constitutional government.

Concern over the growth of government and the resulting loss of personal freedom is what gave birth to the modern conservative movement. Concern about the sanctity of life is what swelled the ranks of the movement with Catholics who were once predominantly Democrats and evangelicals who previously didn’t even vote en masse. Regardless of which of those issues most trips your trigger, we cannot take back control of the Republican Party without each of them working in concert. And the Republican Party is worthless if we don’t wrestle away control from the cynical, feckless, and ineffective party establishment.

But we need a message to unify and mobilize us that is based on shared principles. This message does that. It allows us to walk and chew gum at the same time. Instead of both sides fighting each other for control of the movement, we unite a movement around a shared principle to fight the real enemies to liberty and morality. We are better together. We cannot win if we’re not united. But calls for unity for unity’s sake fall on deaf ears. We must lead on genuine principle to create genuine unity.

We must rally the right for such a time as this, and this is the simple yet principled message to do it. Either we hang together, or we will all hang alone. If we can’t hang together on this one, then I’m not sure where we can.

Why ObamaCare Could Be Finished!

Obamacare In The Moon SC Why ObamaCare could be finished!

In an effort to intimidate states (that is, Republican governors) into setting up state-run ObamaCare exchanges, the leftist authors of the Affordable Care Act have opened the door to lawsuits that could prevent the federal government from selling health plans at affordable rates.

A centerpiece of the ACA involves the offering of federal subsidies “…designed to help low and middle-income individuals purchase health insurance.” However, as the Act clearly states, “…subsidies may only be applied to insurance exchanges set up by individual states, not exchanges implemented by the federal government.” Congress also denied federal exchanges the authority to provide tax credits to employers who offer federally approved insurance plans to their employees.

ObamaCare revolves around the state-financed implementation of exchanges which the law claims will be one-stop shopping centers for healthcare plans approved by the Department of Health and Human Services. However, as of November 28th, 17 states have responded to an HHS-imposed deadline by refusing to set up a state run exchange, leaving it entirely to the federal government to do so.

As a result, exchanges that the federal government will be forced to build in these states may NOT, according to the Act, provide the subsidies and tax credits necessary to make the purchase of ObamaCare plans affordable. And the remaining 10 states have yet to decide whether to build a state exchange or, like the 17 preceding them, leave it to the federal government as well! Half the states in the nation could therefore be forced to “offer” unaffordable healthcare plans. Quite an embarrassing proposition for a president who had claimed his namesake plan would reduce insurance premiums by $2,300 per year for the average family!

Why would ObamaCare authors provide such a glaring loophole in the law, one that says without possibility of contradiction that only state-run exchanges may offer the subsidies and tax credits so vital to participation in the Act? A number of legal scholars “…claim the legislative history shows that the drafters wanted to give states strong incentives to create their own exchanges, and expected them to do so.” What this really means is that the authors were trying to INTIMIDATE and FORCE states into creating exchanges. Otherwise, the left could claim that the Republican governors of those states who did not do so were COSTING their constituents money (subsidies) and denying them affordable insurance coverage, thanks to their refusal to build an exchange. A typical leftist scam and thuggish “boot on the throat!”

However, over half the population remains opposed to the ObamaCare takeover of healthcare. Moreover, in refusing to build a state-run exchange, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker informed HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that “…Wisconsin is already able to provide healthcare to 90% of its citizens without an exchange and the new system would not improve coverage for state citizens.” (4)

And in addition to the fact that the vast majority of Americans are very satisfied with their current healthcare plans, ObamaCare exchanges would cost states up to $100 million per year. States would have NO control over which insurance plans may be offered or how they would be rated, how individuals or employers would be charged, or indeed how much the HHS would force the state itself to pay on a yearly basis in the future. The federal government makes all of the rules, and the state gets to pay the tab.

Only the left could be shocked and offended that states haven’t jumped at the chance to sign up!

Will We Ever See Another Conservative President?

Ronald Reagan Will We Ever See Another Conservative President?

After the shellacking taken in this year’s presidential election, will we ever see another conservative president? In the past, I have opined with great optimism in this space about the strength of the “farm team” of courageous conservative leaders — men like Marco Rubio, Bobby Jindal, Paul Ryan, John Kasich, Rand Paul, Bob McDonnell, Scott Walker and Ted Cruz; and women like Nikki Haley, Susanna Martinez, Sarah Palin, and Deb Fischer — whose ascendency gives dispirited conservatives hope for the salvation of the Republic in the years to come.

After this year’s election, I no longer believe that even the bold leadership of these officials and former officials will be enough. If America is to continue as we have known it, some fundamental steps must be taken to reclaim the nation that once was a shining city on a hill.

Step 1: The borders. Republicans should stop pretending they have any chance of out-pandering Democrats on the issue of immigration. No further talks should be undertaken with liberals about “comprehensive immigration reform” until there is an enforceable system of border control between Mexico and the United States. Call me racist all you want, but every American with anything functioning in his or her cranial cavity knows that our southern border is an open invitation to criminal elements ranging from violent drug dealers to international terrorists.

Step 2: Education. Abraham Lincoln famously said that the philosophy of the classroom in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next. The generation that just re-elected the most radical president in the history of the country has proven that adage to be true. The time has come for conservatives to step up and run for state and local school boards, as well as university regent boards. Conservative patriots with the financial means to do so must begin to fund scholarships to educate the next generation of journalists, college professors, lawyers, judges, and other public officials. The only way we will bring social and fiscal sanity back to America is to counteract lies with truth.

Step 3: The news media. The rise of talk radio and the Fox News Channel has shown that Americans are hungry for voices other than the standard “progressive” claptrap that has emanated from the ivory towers of Manhattan and Washington, D.C., at least since Watergate. The next time a major news media entity goes up for sale, billionaire conservatives should step forward and buy it — and then start reporting the truth.

Step 4: The culture. Over the years, we have seen some relief from the sewage that regularly flows out of our entertainment industry. Despite Mel Gibson’s tragic personal meltdown later on, his “Passion of the Christ” was one of the biggest hits to come out of Hollywood in decades. CBS’s “Blue Bloods” is a Friday night TV hit enjoyed by millions of tradition-minded Americans who like a little action along with a depiction of some solid family values. The show depicts a family of cops who love each other, their wives, and their community (and who actually say grace over their Sunday dinner. Imagine that!) We need more “Blue Bloods” and less “Two and a half Men,” but we will never get there without more bold traditional conservatives with clout in Hollywood.

Step 5: Last, but far from least, America needs spiritual revival. For the last one hundred years — beginning with Woodrow Wilson, continuing on steroids with FDR, and culminating with the election and re-election of Barack Obama — government has been our god. Stating the antidote as plainly as possible, God must once again become our god. Does that mean that God wants a Republican president? No, but I think He would be pleased with a humble leader who believes in liberty and who acknowledges that God, not government, is the answer to our problems.

Disaster surely awaits us if we continue in the direction we are now headed, and change will not happen next year or in the next election cycle. What is as certain as tomorrow’s sunrise is that we will not see it happen at all if we do not take the first steps down a different path than the one we now tread.

The States Fight In The Last Ditch Against Obamacare

Barack Obama between flags SC The States Fight In the Last Ditch Against Obamacare

Last July, I wrote that the states still had the power to kill Obamacare, despite the Supreme Court’s gross dereliction of duty in Florida v. HHS. My point was that the insurance exchanges required by PPACA are the key to its success or failure, and that the law grants the states enormous power in the way they are set up. The ostensible purpose of these exchanges is to provide “marketplaces” where people without health insurance can acquire subsidized coverage. Ironically, the law doesn’t actually require states to set up these bureaucracies. Yet, as Sally Pipes and Hal Scherz note, “only state-based exchanges … may distribute credits and subsidies.”

In other words, if the states refuse to set up exchanges, they cut off the subsidies and tax credits that are the lifeblood of Obamacare. Moreover, states that decline to set up these enabling bureaucracies will also be protecting their business communities from job-killing federal penalties — even if the federal government comes in and sets up its own exchanges in those states. The Cato Institute’s Michael Cannon explains, “defaulting to a federal exchange exempts a state’s employers from the employer mandate — a tax of $2,000 per worker per year.” This is why more than half of the 50 have opted not to set up state-run exchanges.

Last Friday, three more governors officially announced their refusal to set up state-run Obamacare exchanges. Ohio’s John Kasich, Wisconsin’s Scott Walker, and Maine’s Paul LePage all released statements indicating that they would not assist the Obama administration in its effort to socialize health care in their states. All three governors made their decisions based on the knowledge that, even if they cooperate on the exchanges, they would have little control over how the exchanges are operated. As Cato’s Cannon puts it, “[A] state-created exchange is not a state-controlled exchange. All exchanges will be controlled by Washington.”

In fact, the grim reality is that Washington won’t be content to merely control the exchanges. Federal bureaucrats have already begun rewriting the law when the provisions of the actual statute prove inconvenient. When it became obvious that many states would refuse to create exchanges, the Obama administration decided to funnel tax credits and subsidies through federally-created exchanges, ignoring clear language in the law indicating that such premium-assistance was restricted to state-run exchanges. The IRS recently finalized a regulation signaling its intention to illegally provide premium assistance through federal exchanges.

This outrage prompted the state of Oklahoma to file an amended complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. The state points out that “The State of Oklahoma has exercised its right not to establish an Exchange” and that the provisions of ObamaCare “not only permit the State of Oklahoma to make this policy choice, but also created a mechanism … by which the State of Oklahoma can put its decision into effect.” It goes on to show that “The [IRS] Final Rule renders the mechanism inoperative.” In other words, Oklahoma complied with the provisions of the law and now the IRS has illegally ignored those provisions.

The Battle For Our Republic!

US Flag 3 SC The Battle for our Republic!

Many of those who enjoy reading my articles have asked why I haven’t been writing lately. The answer is quite simple. After a year and half on the road defending Wisconsin’s Governor Scott Walker and our Republic under God, I ran out of income to sustain my travels, thus my full-time work at a local Academy and part-time work at a local College.

BUT, I have not given up the Battle to stop Obama and his radical progressive, socialist, and Marxist followers from destroying our great Republic! Throughout the week and on weekends, I have been speaking across Wisconsin and the Mid-West proclaiming Liberty to anyone who will listen and take action. While Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have re-energized the Republican base and attracted many conservatives and independents, we must taken nothing for granted all the way up to November 6th!

And even if we win, we must continue to educate, promulgate, and disseminate the limited government, conservative, Christian, free enterprise, and limited government values and ideas that are the lifeblood of what makes our Nation the greatest form of government the world has ever seen.

God forbid, but if Obama wins, he will accelerate America’s socialistic slouching to Gomorrah. A Romney-Ryan victory does not mean that the “Cultural and Political War” to destroy our Republic under God is over. Far from it!

Secular-socialistic-progressive Left Wing Statism has so permeated our society that it will be a perpetual battle to stop their pernicious controlling ways from destroying the Liberties we cherish so much.

After traveling Wisconsin defending our Great Governor from the Union Re-Call Mobocrats, anarchists, socialists, spoiled teachers, and other radicals, I have spent my time traveling Wisconsin and the Mid-West with WI Senator Ron Johnson, ex-WI Governor Tommy Thompson and a myriad of other conservative candidates. I have been to Tea Party Rallies too numerous to mention and organizations like Wisconsin Family Council, Americans for Prosperity, the Heritage Foundation, CPAC, Family Research Council, Stand Up for Religious Freedom etc. etc. etc…..

I am tired, very tired.

BUT, like Senator Ron Johnson told the audience at CPAC-Chicago in June and to me last week at our Thunder In the Valley Rally in Oshkosh, Wisconsin: “TOUGH!” He’s right. Tough. We are in WAR!

About the time I think I cannot drive another mile, speak another word, or knock on another door, I see the bloody feet and bodies of our brave soldiers at Valley Forge, the Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, etc. I remember the sacrifice made by many Patriots of their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor; and I quietly get back in my car and then stand up to the podium encouraging more Patriots to join me in knocking on more doors and speaking to more neighbors “proclaiming Liberty throughout the land and unto the inhabitants thereof!”

Take nothing for granted, stay the course, continue to work hard, and do whatever you can to help save our Nation. Hopefully we can all celebrate on the eve of November 6th and get up the next day still trusting in God to help us restore our Shining Republic upon a Hill. Godspeed to you all!
