Feigning Powerlessness to Retain Power

William J. Olson, FloydReports.com

There once was a time that elected leaders wanted to be seen as powerful to gain the confidence of their constituents. But many House Republicans, who now have in their hands total power to end runaway government once and for all, are feigning powerlessness.

These House Republicans claim to be just one-third of the legislative process, unable to achieve anything useful without compromise and a bipartisan consensus. They grouse that the Democrats in the Senate and President Obama are forcing them to settle for what they can get in exchange for an inevitable and necessary increase in the debt limit. They claim to need even greater electoral victories in 2012 before they can stop the spending.

The truth is that House Republicans already hold all the cards. The debt ceiling is already fixed in law, and will remain fixed unless they capitulate. Rather than just saying no to an increase in the debt limit which would end deficit spending, the GOP has developed “Cut, Cap, and Balance” which it sells as a principled proposal. Yet, with CC&B, the House Republicans propose to end the deficit spending by the curious method of increasing the national debt by $2.4 trillion (almost 17 percent) to $16.7 trillion.

In increasing the debt ceiling, the House Republicans leaders are doing what comes naturally. The House leadership historically has not wanted to stop spending — with entitlements like Medicare Part D they have used our own money to buy our votes just like the Democrats. The motivation behind CC&B is not about cutting current spending, capping future spending, or balancing the budget — it’s about what it’s always been about — the politics of reelection.

It could be that the House Republicans are acting out of fear that in holding fast to principle they would not be seen as being “responsible” in the eyes of the media and Wall Street….

The “New Normal” is Unacceptable

Susan Stamper Brown, FloydReports.com

We’ve heard a lot of pep-talks recently that it might be time to for Americans to reduce their living standards and expectations in order to accept the “New Normal” that is inevitable if Washington’s reckless spending spree on the taxpayer’s dime continues.

It’s difficult to grasp the notion that citizens are expected to go without in order to fund a government that is about to bust the seams of its financial britches. Are they not the ones who are constitutionally-bound to work for us and not the other way around? More disheartening are the progressive Democrats who, like mindless lemmings, are all too willing to follow their feckless leaders in a 90-to-nothing sprint over a cliff while screaming “It’s Bush’s fault” during the free-fall.

Blaming our financial situation solely on Bush is political suicide for Democrats. The evidence that demands a verdict came down when Standard and Poor’s recently downgraded America’s economic outlook to “negative” – because of her “very large budget deficits and rising government indebtedness.” Days later, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted that China’s economy will supersede America’s – by the year 2016.

This damning report will be met by some with nauseating jubilation….

Got Stupid? Americans Embrace Obamanomics

Don Feder, GrassTopsUSA.com

“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.” — H.L. Mencken.

According to an April 17-19 Washington Post-ABC News Poll, a majority, or at the very least a plurality, of Americans are: 1) insane; 2) brainwashed; 3) really, really stupid; or 4) so naïve that they need to be restrained to keep them from harming themselves.

In this survey, the president has a net favorability rating of 52% (“somewhat favorable” plus “strongly favorable”), this notwithstanding that from January 2009 to April 2011 – the retail price of gas rose 69.6% (in the Chicago area – it now averages $4.17 a gallon) unemployment-benefit recipients are up 22% and the number of long-term unemployed rose 146%.

Still, more than half of Americans have a favorable opinion of the man who’s steered the ship of state during that period. On the plus side, there was no shortage of ice aboard the Titanic – as it sank.

By 45% to 44% Americans say they trust Obama over the GOP to do a better job of cutting spending to balance the budget. Okay, so we padlock the Pentagon, fire the Border Patrol – and then what?

Americans trust the president to “handle taxes,” over Republicans, by 47% to 42%. Dracula would have done an exceptional job running a blood bank.

When it comes to protecting the middle class, the public prefers the president to Republicans by 51% to 39%. As a candidate in 2008, Obama characterized Middle America as the domain of gun nuts, religious fanatics, bigots and xenophobes. So, a majority expect the president to stand up for folks for whom he has the utmost contempt. That’s logical.

Of those surveyed, only 39% think Obama’s views are “too liberal,” 8% think they’re “too conservative” (who knew the American Communist Party was that large) and 49% think the knee-jerk opinions of this doctrinaire leftist are (I kid you not) “about right.”

When it comes to tackling that pesky national debt, 69% oppose cutting Medicaid (medical welfare for the poor) and 78% oppose any reduction in Medicare (medical services for the elderly), but 72% support attacking that combination scapegoat/piggybank – taxpayers making over $250,000 per annum.

At the same time, 44% (a plurality) said the economy is getting worse, 37% (also a plurality) said jobs are getting scarcer in their area, 78% have noticed that retail prices are rising, and 71% said increases at the pump are causing a financial hardship in their household. Not to worry, the president feels their pain – on alternate weeks when he’s not on vacation, which happen to be the safest times to live in America.

What would it take to get the 57% who think our beloved president isn’t too liberal to change their minds: If he went on television Sunday mornings and read excerpts from “Das Kapital” to the kiddies, if he put George Soros on a $20 bill, if he channeled Che Guevara, if he and his pals Jeremiah Wright and Al Sharpton formed the Marxist-Leninist Chorale Group and sang a medley of old Soviet tunes?

The Judas Media

Michael Oberndorf

The badly misnamed “mainstream” media have been outdoing themselves lately in their efforts to bring down capitalist America, as the propaganda machine of the neo-fascist Left. The notion that they are even aware of mainstream American thought is a big lie, in and of itself. The radical leftists whose agenda they push amount to at most 20 percent of Americans.

Over the past few weeks, the propaganda machine has worked overtime to make it seem like the miniscule and largely symbolic cuts to the Obama-Soetoro/Reid/Pelosi/Soros budget were on par with the Holocaust or the Armenian genocide. They uncritically parroted every wild charge and insane lie that any Democrat chose to make, and largely suppressed the truth of the cuts and the so-called “compromise” until after the fact, when the damage had been done. Joseph Goebbels must have been smiling in Hell, seeing how well his lessons have been learned by the present generation of “journalists.”

Continuing on, the propaganda masters are out to sell Americans another huge lie: that if they don’t let the neo-fascists raise the debt ceiling, again, the world will end.
