Though the nation’s isolated, repressed citizens have suffered for generations, reports suggest North Korea has managed to become more despotic under the rule of Kim Jong Un. Dennis Rodman’s buddy has allegedly slaughtered dissenters – including members of his own family – in some of the most inhumane ways imaginable.
Of course, news out of the communist nation is notoriously unreliable; and some of these reports have since been disputed. In any case, there seems to be no question that the North Korean dictator rules with an iron fist and, like his father, does not tolerate opposition.
The latest reports, if true, drive home that point with terrifying clarity. According to South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo, a high-ranking official was recently “executed by flamethrower.”
This allegation comes just months after Kim’s uncle – along with several other officials – was reportedly executed or imprisoned in an effort to eradicate dissention in the ranks. O Sang Hon, the deputy public security minister reportedly killed, was among the members of that overthrown administration.
Jang Song Thaek, Kim’s uncle, was not the only Kim family member purged by the totalitarian regime. Jang’s sister and brother-in-law, who happened to be the nation’s Cuban ambassador, were also allegedly executed. Reports suggest Jang’s entire family – including children – have been slaughtered.
The South Korean press indicates this is just the beginning of an ongoing eradication of Jang’s supporters. The newspaper suggests hundreds of officials are set to be killed by the regime.
While North Korea’s unparalleled isolationism makes validating such reports extremely difficult, stories of political executions seem to fall in line with what is known of Kim and the repressive regime under which his subjects live. Some reports – including allegations that all men in the country were forced to cut their hair in the same style as Kim – have been disputed; however, few contest accounts that the regime engages in political executions.
The fact that stories such as this are so common only proves how dangerous and secretive the nation truly is. If Kim is willing to treat his own countrymen this abhorrently, the potential risk he poses to the rest of the world is staggering.
