Our nation is racing toward a fiscal cliff. Yet, as Sen. Jim DeMint noted, instead of hitting the brakes, Congress and the president just set the cruise control. “The Budget Control Act of 2011” offers an object lesson in exactly the sort of empty compromise that has gotten our nation into its present mess. Faced with the devastating consequences of unprecedented and unsustainable federal spending, both parties agreed on only one thing: to lock in that spending for at least the next two years. Bypassing the normal legislative process, the deal was written behind closed doors and dumped it into the laps of both houses under the threat that failing to pay the government’s bills would jeopardize the nation’s triple-A credit.
Unfortunately, the deal didn’t just pay our current bills – it gave the most spendthrift administration in history an open credit line to continue its spending spree beyond 2012. Ironically, it ended up costing the United States its triple-A credit rating by failing to rein in spending significantly. Indeed, Standard & Poor’s had explicitly warned for the last two months that $4 trillion had to be cut from the projected ten-year deficit to preserve the nation’s credit. Exactly right, we are on the road to financial serfdom! Sadly, the Republicans are getting the blame (as compared to the spendthrift Democrats)… but to a large extent, they are also complicit in Obama's runaway spending as they refused to hold the line & caved in to the Democratic spending plans.
We really have 2 "big government" political parties with 2 slightly different "flavors". We need only 1 of them, the other can morph into a "small government" party, or head to the dustbin of history to be replaced with another new, truly "small government" party. If the Republicans were smart, they would change now. But I don't know if they will change (if they do, it will only be the result of them being dragged kicking & screaming to change by the Tea Party supporters). Otherwise, a new "third party" will need to emerge to replace the Republican Party… perhaps the Libertarian, "Independent" or Constitution Party.
In any case, when the US Dollar collapses & ceases to be the lone world's reserve currency & a world-wide depression sinks in (because the whole world will be holding worthless US Dollars), the USA will be forced into small government again. Economic reality will have set in. Big government, high tax, high regulation, lots of red tape & central planning can't compete with small government, low taxes, low regulation but even playing field & free market policies. Keynesian economics fail, Austrian economics win. Remember also to get rid of the corrupt Federal reserve & return to sound money (not a simple gold standard… gold can be "cornered"… but perhaps back to a dual gold/silver standard like our nation started with).

I always admired Tom McClintock and thought that California really blew it when the selected Schwarzenegger governor over Tom, but Tom has not done as I expected he might in the house. Why does he turn his head on Obama's usurpation?

He was later charged with DUI among other violations.
