Michelle Obama has long dedicated much of her very public image to overhauling the supposedly unhealthy menus in America’s public schools. The resulting National School Lunch Program, in typical leftist fashion, prohibits free choice by determining precisely what a school may be allowed to serve. While such programs theoretically further the mission of facilitating a healthier society, those tasked with implementing the regulations are facing a pronounced backlash.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District in New York recently dropped the guidelines, and administrators remain vocally critical of the program.
Nicky Boehm was responsible for abiding by the regulations set forth, but ultimately realized that students were just not interested.
“Students felt they weren’t getting good value for their money,” she said, noting that older students “complained the portion sizes were too small and many more students brougth in lunch from home.”
In general, the district claims that school lunch resulted in “hungry, frustrated” students.
Another concern, according to district officials, is a marked drop in revenue. Not only did schools prepare food that was never purchased; the U.S. Department of Agriculture stated that districts will spend a combined $3.2 billion to comply with the regulations.
The cost for Burnt Hills-Ballston in one school year alone was $100,000, which went toward providing unappetizing and ultimately wasted meals.
This was not the first school district to abandon ship after implementing the mandates, and I predict many more will follow suit. The federal government is not shy about spending money (or, more aptly, forcing its subjects to spend their own money abiding by a never-ending stream of bureaucratic regulation.)
America was founded on the principles of limited government and a free populace. Today’s crop of political extremists, however, are dedicated to the mission of inverting those characteristics.
As more and more outraged citizens stand up to these unilateral mandates, it is unmistakably obvious that America will not be quietly sieged by those seeking to dictate our every move.
Forcing a school to serve subpar meals is one thing; getting kids to eat it is entirely another.
