A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.
The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.
Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”
“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”
The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course.

What a bunch of BS this is. Farmers and ranchers should revolt and kick the government people off their land, with force if necessary. They would never tell me how to work my children on my own home and property. I hope some farm group will immediately file suit against the government.
This country boy appreciates all the knowledge and capabilities I developed doing innumerable tasks as a child. Yes, sometimes resented them when interfered with Saturday Cartoons. At least now I know how to do much of anything as a jack-of-all-trades (with a technical occupation, by the way). Our farm was not self sustaining, providing any goods. I did earn spending money working at Chicken Barn, Pig Sales Barn, harvesting bales of hay, clearing land with chainsaw, etc, etc with no serious injury any with common sense not a boring 90 Hour (??????) safety class. 2 or 3 weeks training from someone who has never spent more than that many hours in a barn or on a tractor??? Assinine!!!!!!!!
Why would it surprise ANYONE that the government could come in and impose their will upon the farmers who parasitically thrive on unfounded subsidies? The government pays MILLIONS to farmers who live all around us in Ohio. Farmers, who buy brand new equipment, personal vehicles, tear down perfectly good buildings and rebuild newer ones ALL FOR STATUS…and then you hear them BRAG about how they paid for it with their subsidy checks. http://farm.ewg.org/region.php?fips=39011. They get paid NOT to plant. They get paid if its too wet, too dry, too sunny, too cloudy, too hot, too cold etc., and REALLY believe that they deserve this money. After all, "A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have."
That is just one more NOSE stuck in our business, as to how to raise our children. I am glad that my sons are grown now, for both learned RESPONSIBILITY by working. One worked on a ranch with horses, and one grew up helping his dad working in the construction business. As a result, both sons learned how to do something other than play video games, and neither of them are FAT! When I was a girl, I learned how to grow food, and harvest it, and how to put it away for use in the winter months. This comes under the heading of “STUPIDING DOWN AMERICAN CHILDREN”, and God knows that they behave stupidly enough as it is, with parents refusing to BE parents now days. And the parents who are divorced, where one parent has to do both jobs of raising a child or two, and also earn a living. Lord, it’s not hard enough to get kids raised these days, the ALMIGHTY STUPID GOVERNMENT has to stick it’s nose into everything, and every aspect of our lives, to make it even worse. These farm kids earn this money in order to have some spending money for the summer months, and to help with the school supplies come school time. People, it’s time that we as adult Americans, who are sick to death of this bunch of traitors and nazi spies and other names, it is time for us to come together, stand up, and take our nation back out of the hands of those who would go so far as to TAKE OUR CHILDREN AWAY FROM US FOR SOME “law” that WE SUPPOSEDLY BREAK! By trying to TEACH OUR CHILDREN WHAT THEY NEED TO KNOW WHEN THEY BECOME ADULTS THEMSELVES! This is a commandment of God, to “BRING UP A CHILD IN THE WAY HE SHOULD GO, SO THAT WHEN HE IS OLD, HE WILL NOT DEPART FROM IT!” The question to you all is this, “Are you going to abide by some idiotic “law” made by some idiot man, who knows nothing of our children, or are you going to listen to the WORD OF GOD HIMSELF?!!??
Parents need to rise up with a fury and do like the manager in "O Brother Where Art Thou?" who threw the troublemaker out into the street saying "…and stay out of Woolworths". "Stay off my property, out of my house, and leave my children alone!"
This present government discourages teaching children responsibility! They fear responsible citizens with common sense! The greatest generations, and closest families in this great country are those who worked the land together as a family. Those children who were taught that hard work put food on the table, not a government check in the mailbox! We need to take back our country, and TEACH our children, not indoctrinate them! My guess would be that most these PC liberals never got a good smack on their backside when they were kids! It amazes me that these “Save The Children From Falling Off Tractors” people are the very same ones who fight against securing our borders, allowing billions of dollars worth of drugs to circulate throughout the United States, frying the brains of our youth! I’ve never seen a child fall off a tractor, but I have seen many children die from drugs!

Those who create these assinine laws HAVE NEVER WORKED A DAY IN THEIR MISERABLE LIVES, and then they want to tell you what you can and can not do. Flush them all down the toilet in November!
I hope that Labor Secretary Hilda Solis gets a lot of flak from kids, parents, 4-H Leaders, FFA Leaders and all other interested parties for this one. What does she want to do, put all farms and ranches out of business? How will farm and ranch kids learn the right way to take care of a farm or ranch and all the animals on those farms and ranches? Revoking government approval and certification of 4-H and FFA and replacing them with a 90 hour federal government training course will teach these kids nothing that their parents, 4-H and FFA have been teaching them for years. There is no way a 90 hour training course can possibly replace what these kids learn at home and through 4-H & FFA. I hope that this gets voted down in a big hurry because it is pure nonsense. She should know better.
