Though she has since resigned in disgrace amid the continuing scandal, new details of former IRS official Lois Lerner’s outrageous partisan activities continue to surface.
Evidence shows that the tax-exempt division of the agency, at the time headed by Lerner, targeted conservative groups by demanding answers to invasive questions and delaying its response to their requested status.
According to emails made public Thursday, Lerner also shared these groups’ private tax information with the Federal Election Commission, which likely constitutes a felony under Section 6013 of the Internal Revenue Code.
Through a series of emails dating back to Feb. 3, 2009, the FEC initially asked Lerner if Tea Party-affiliated organizations had received tax-exempt status. In response, she made the illogical decision to send copies of classified tax data from a number of conservative groups.
In addition to tax returns, which include sensitive financial data, Lerner sent a list of intrusive questions the IRS asked the groups. Furthermore, reports show that she sent additional information such as corporate documents and ostensibly private communications between the IRS and the targeted groups.
Despite sending a plethora of information, Lerner’s email notoriously left the FEC’s original question unanswered. Each of the organizations about which she revealed private data were still in the review process when she sent the correspondences.
According to Tom Fitton, president of advocacy group Judicial Watch, the release of this information adds a troubling new wrinkle to the ongoing IRS scandal. His organization was the first to obtain and disseminate the emails.
“These extensive emails and other materials provide a disturbing window into the activities of two out-of-control federal agencies — the IRS and FEC,” he said.
At this point, Fitton said “there is the very real question as to whether these documents evidence a crime.”
This administration has been plagued by scandals, each of which were caused by ideologues who put their own interests ahead of the will of the American people. Luckily, technological advances and an alternative media anxious to expose their wrongdoings make it impossible for the left’s crimes to remain hidden forever.
