At the request of a left-wing civil rights group, the government agency that enforces employment discrimination is considering outlawing criminal background checks as a tool to screen job applicants because it presents a hiring barrier for minorities…
Because Hispanics and African Americans have higher rates of arrest and convictions than whites, they suffer discrimination at a disproportionate rate, according to the ACLU. This presents a barrier to hiring and promotion, the group claims, adding that 65 million Americans have a criminal record yet growing numbers of employers refuse to hire people with convictions. At the ACLU’s request the EEOC held a special meeting last week to focus on the economic, social and civil rights implications as the as the agency “considers updating its guidance on background checks.”
Various experts testified that “people of color” are disproportionately affected by the criminal background checks, creating yet another barrier for those returning to their community from the criminal justice system. A Justice Department official who handles “urban affairs” pointed out that a disproportionate number of African Americans have criminal records yet they need to be able to compete for legitimate job opportunities.
A college professor and civil rights attorney thanked the “new leadership” at the EEOC for bringing attention to a “profound civil rights challenge.” In a letter thanking EEOC commissioners, who are appointed by the president, for holding the meeting, the ACLU reminds the agency of a tragedy; “more than 850 reports from women and men around the country who have been refused or dismissed from employment because of their criminal record.” The ACLU also gives the commission “recommendations” to solve the matter.

fullmetalpatriot: IF the perpetrator continues in that kind of behaviour, I agree with you. They should have stronger measures taken against them. However, I think, if we are talking about young kids of sixteen to twenty, (because let's face it, most of these young folk are NOT mature enoug to be treated as adults at eighteen), and it is their "First" offense, they should be given a chance to prove they can be productive citizens.
Personally, I think until they are twenty one, very, very few of our young people know what they are doing these dyas. The education system is "Dumbing them down" further each year.

Now I am wondering even more why both Michele and Barrack Obama voluntarily surrendered their license to practice law. This is something not usually done unless one is facing some serious charges in court and trying to avoid going to court.
I am beginning to wonder if perhaps we should add an amendment to the Constitution which would bar all
lawyers from being eligible. Their quality has certainly gone downhill since Abraham Lincoln was elected.
I think Obama is afraid he won't be able to find another job after leaving the White House so he's trying to do whatever is necessary to make it easier for him (and possibly Michelle) to do so. Keep in mind that they won't some miniscule job, so the chances of having their background checked will be a lot greater. I personally believe that he and Michelle committed crimes prior to moving into the White House that caused the loss of their law licences. According to a local attorney, voluntarily surrendering a law license is what a lawyer does when they know that they have committed one or more crimes and the legal system is has enough evidence to file charges against them.

I am a White person, who has a child who got into trouble a within a week after their eighteenth birthday. This young man has done his time and paid all the restitution for that crime.
In actual fact, (and I am not making excuses for him – he did wrong), but, the co perpetrator, who had talked him into the crimes and received ALL the stolen property they took, was a young "Tribal Indian", who has an extensive record, was supposed to do 30 days, be on probation for five years and pay half the restitution.
This young "Tribal Indian", did only the three days, over the weekend, after they were first arrested, was taken OFF probation after three weeks, and NEVER PAID A DIME OF THE RESTITUTION.
Our son was still in school, as he is ADHD and was trying hard, and was very determined to get his graduation Diploma, and become a good citizen.
So my husband and I had to pay the WHOLE $3500 restitution, so that our son could be allowed to finish with HIS Probation. He would have been on probation forever, if the restitution had NOT been paid. He was one of the lucky ones, as both my husband and I had good jobs and could afford to help him.
He was lucky enough a few years back to actually find a decent Manager, who gave him a job in one of the fast food places.
He worked for over twelve months for this company and was being trained for a higher position. During this period he married and now has two children.
However, he got into an accident and was unable to work for a while. During his recovery time that restaurant had a fire and was damaged beyone repair, so they closed it and laid everyone off.
Since then, over three years ago, he has been unable to find work, not only because of his felonies, but because there are so many illegals taking the jobs in our state. But, from what an employer, who would have hired him, told us recently, it is mostly because of the felonies from their prospective. He is in partnership with another company and THEY are VERY HARD on FELONS.
His felonies happened almost nine years ago and HE is still paying the price, even though he learned his lesson, a very DEAR lesson, and has parted company with all the "dubious" friends he had been hanging out with, long ago and kept his nose clean.
The problem is, these darn do gooders, who think they know better than the rest of us, forced through a law, so that the cops could make about TEN (In my sons case "three") charges out of ONE and then these young folk can't have the record expunged for TEN YEARS.
My husband and I are retired and now support our son and his two children on our Social Security.
I am NOT a Liberal, but I would welcome this change to the law, as long as it is not just for the "AFrican Americans" etc., but also for the "White" folks too.
I believe our son, who is trying so hard to make a good life for himself and his children, and deserve a chance, not just because he is our son, but because he is really trying to give HIS children a good life and be a good citizen.
We have many young people in our community who have gotten into trouble at or around seventeen or eighteen years of age.
These kids are not given a chance to prove they can straighten out and most are "forced" to live a life of crime. Either because their parents don't care, OR, their parents can't afford to help them anymore.
I believe most of these young folk deserve a second chance.
NO you are not a "racist", but youmay be part of the problem. I owned a business and I hired some of these kids. They have turned out just fine.

One way to solve this problem, stop disobeying the Law. Very simple. If these groups win on this what is to stop rapists from working in schools, senior citizen developments, forgers and bank robbers from working in banks. The line has to be drawn someplace. Obey the law and cutting down the ratio is the best way.

First I want to start off by saying I’m a 20 year old, God(I don’t mean Allah I mean Jesus) fearing, red blooded American. I don’t have a criminal record. And I feel I am a mature adult because I understand the consequences of any of my action and will answer for them if needed. If people want to commit a crime they should get all the consequences that go with it. I mean someone comes to my house I’m goin to ask the person who brought them whether they have sticky fingers or not because I don’t want stuff coming up missing. Background checks are basically the same. But the thing is, it is not improportionate if the amount of “people of color” commit more crimes. Being a felon does not make you black, it make you a criminal and if you can’t own up to your own mistakes and face the music that makes you a coward.
