Rather than deal effectively with the rampant problem of illegal immigration, one mayor in Massachusetts apparently thought it would be much easier to engage in an argument of semantics.
Along with a city alderman, the mayor recently introduced a new policy that would ban the word ‘illegal’ when referring to those in violation of our nation’s immigration laws.
His change of heart reportedly came after hearing testimony from some in his constituency.
One teen, whose cousin — in the U.S. illegally — was recently deported, said immigration officers “made me angry” by using the word ‘illegal.’
Apparently, this mayor believes our freedom of speech is superseded if our word choice angers anyone, whether or not the speech is inherently accurate.
The teen said such labels made her cousin “seem like a criminal” and “is a wrong way to describe a human being.”
Maybe I’m missing something, but doesn’t the act of brazenly committing a crime go a long way in making one “seem like a criminal?”
For her part, she said a better substitute for ‘illegal’ would be ‘undocumented’, and she undoubtedly has support among the city’s leadership.
“We made it clear here that whatever your status is, wherever you’re from, we are your mayor, we’re your aldermen, this is your city and we’re here to service you,” the mayor said to his ‘undocumented’ citizens.
Though never a proponent of political correctness, I believe many of its torchbearers truly wanted to reduce needlessly offensive language and acts.
Now, however, the PC police are actively mischaracterizing entire groups of people because the truth hurts their feelings. As harsh as it might seem, sometimes hurt feelings are the only way to get someone’s attention.
