Tim Harris is an inspiration to many. Despite having Down Syndrome, he is able to live life to its fullest. Having graduated high school, he has since earned a certificate in food services, worked in numerous restaurants, and now owns his own restaurant called Tim’s Place.
Known for his warm hugs, Tim is always more than willing to give them to anyone who wants one.
“When we found out that his birthday was National Hug Day, we said, ‘We have to make this an event,’” said Tim’s mother, Jeannie Harris.
They chose to host a Hug-A-Thon in Tim’s honor, taking donations and giving them to the Albuquerque Area Random Acts of Kindness, a local nonprofit started by city and county firefighters in Albuquerque.
Last year, they raised $6,000; and Tim gave more than 1,000 hugs. This year’s Hug-A-Thon was their second, and their goal was to raise $10,000 for charity with 2,000 hugs.
“My favorite part of the Hug-A-Thon is to hang out with everybody here,” said Tim. “This is so amazing. I am very happy. I have somebody here to love.”
With the love and encouragement he receives from his family, it is no wonder Tim loves to be friendly and kind to everyone who enters through the doors of Tim’s Place.
So if you’re ever in the Albuquerque area, consider stopping by Tim’s friendly restaurant for some hot food and a warm hug – calorie- and guilt-free, with just the right amount of sweet.
