It has become abundantly obvious in recent years that the chasm between the conservative and establishment wings of the Republican Party is only growing wider. As the Tea Party movement continues to attract patriots of all stripes, the leftist element of the GOP is only growing more desperate, clinging even tighter to the losing policies of capitulation and unilateral compromise.
At least one conservative organization is taking the fight directly to these big government Republicans with a new initiative called “Dump the Leadership.” According to recent announcements by the widespread grassroots group For America, the campaign’s mission is to convince “GOP leadership in both the House and Senate to step aside.”
Reports indicate the coalition is setting aside hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund the push, which will include advertisements targeting John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and Kevin McCarthy in the House, along with Senate Republican leaders Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn.
Cornyn is facing a conservative battle on another front, as well. Steve Stockman, who received ample Tea Party support as a Texas congressman, is setting his sights on the Senate minority whip in an upcoming primary.
Stockman has spoken out firmly against Cornyn’s “habit of attacking conservatives,” a trend he said was illustrated in Cornyn’s treatment of Sen. Ted Cruz during the debate over ObamaCare. After initially supporting the call to repeal the unpopular healthcare law, Stockman said Cornyn “sided with the president, essentially, in making sure ObamaCare became law while Cruz did everything possible to stop it.”
For America’s campaign will focus on leaders group chairman Brent Bozell says are working at cross purposes with the party’s conservative base.
“Time and again, year after year, the Republican leadership in the House and Senate has come to grassroots conservatives and Tea Party supporters pleading four our money, our volunteers, our time, our energy and our votes,” he said.
Instead of keeping their promise to “stop the liberal assault on our freedoms and our national treasury,” Bozell said there is not a “single conservative accomplishment this so-called ‘leadership’ can point to.”
