Judge Refuses To Block Florida Voter Purge

Florida SC Judge refuses to block Florida voter purge

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A judge on Wednesday rejected a request by federal authorities to block Florida’s contentious move to remove potentially ineligible voters from its rolls.

The decision could prompt some counties to revive efforts to identify registered voters who are not U.S. citizens. Many counties had suspended the effort after hearing about conflicting legal opinions.

U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle ruled there was nothing in federal voting laws that prevent the state from identifying ineligible voters even if it is close to the upcoming Aug. 14 election.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit earlier this month to halt the purge, saying federal voting laws barred the effort since it was within 90 days of a federal election. U.S. officials also said the list used by Florida had “critical imperfections, which lead to errors that harm and confuse voters.”

Hinkle in ruling from the bench said federal laws are designed to block states from removing eligible voters close to an election. He said they are not designed to block voters who should have never been allowed to cast ballots in the first place.

BUT, if I were in the position to do anything about purging those voter rolls, it would BE DONE, with or without authorization from ANYONE, because it's the RIGHT thing to do!!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but June – November is closer to 150 days, not 90 days.

  2. ALL states should be doing this. In Texas and in Arkansas where I have voted – I always had to show my drivers license and my voter card. Hopefully they are checking even closer…

I accidentally took my daughters sample ballot to the polls with me, and was told that they could just get my info off of it. The man asked for my ID, which I gladly gave him, and he said you aren't Elizabeth. When I explained that I had unknowingly taken her sample ballot, he checked the voter roles and found me there. He apologised for the inconvenience, and I replied that I was glad that he was careful to make sure the correct person was voting. I live in Calif., so this was actually a pleasant surprise. I'm glad that even in uberliberal Calif. the people at the polls are concientious about voter ID.
