While an ongoing scandal continues to prove the level of disdain the Internal Revenue Service holds toward conservative groups, recent reports indicate that the tax-collecting agency is quite fond of another community — illegal immigrants.
By taking advantage of the IRS Additional Child Tax Credit, officials say that illegals have received at least $4.2 billion in improper payouts.
Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) spoke out against the practice, explaining that applicable laws need “clarification that undocumented immigrants are not eligible.”
Along with Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) Grassley explained that he is the co-sponsor of a bill that would clarify and close this loophole. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, however, has not yet allowed them to present the amendment, he added.
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration seems to support the spirit of the amendment. According to a 2009 audit, officials “believe legislation is needed to clarify whether or not refundable tax credits such as the ACTC may be paid to filers without a Social Security number.”
Furthermore, the audit claims, an amendment “could resullt in cost savings to the federal government of $1.8 billion annually.”
Official IRS statements indicate that the agency does not believe the current ACTC policy allows agents to deny tax credits based on immigration status. While it seems such knowledge should be common, the same group also apparently thought that targeting Tea Party groups based solely on their political affiliation was OK, too.
The audit includes one comment that likely resonates with an overwhelming number of Americans who feel that the government is to blame for fostering the rampant disregard of our immigration laws.
“As it now stands,” the document reads, “the payment of federal funds through this tax benefit appears to provide additional incentive for aliens to enter, reside and work in the U.S. without authorization, which contradicts federal law and policy to remove such incentives.”
Considering that the systematic targeting of conservative organizations was obviously a politically-motivated move, one wonders if unlawfully paying illegal immigrants has a similar upside for the left. Here in blatant violation of our laws, they know exactly who is responsible for sending them their tax credit checks each year.
While the pro-amnesty crowd continues to push for illegals to have all the rights of a legitimate citizen, these individuals will have every incentive to continue voting for the Democrat party.
