The flawed logic of leftist gun-grabbers is readily apparent in the reaction to Monday’s mass shooting at the Washington, D.C., Navy Yard. Celebrities and politicians alike rushed to call for even stricter gun control legislation following the tragedy that left at least 12 victims dead and eight more wounded.
As with countless other shooting incidents before it, though, gun control would have done little to curtail the actions of suspected gunman Aaron Alexis. While increased regulations might make it more difficult for him — and everyone else, for that matter — to get a gun, reports show at least two of the firearms he used during the rampage were taken from those authorized to carry them in the otherwise gun-free zone.
Alexis, who was killed during the incident, was initially seen carrying a shotgun. When his body was recovered, though, reports indicate he was found with an AR-15 and a 9mm pistol. He apparently retrieved the guns and ammunition from his victims, allowing him to continue his shooting spree.
House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said he expects this incident will “renew the discussions about access to weapons that can be used to kill a lot of people quickly.” While his rhetoric surely resonates with the anti-gun crowd, the fact remains that no amount of government restriction could have prevented this crazed gunman from perpetrating his heinous crime.
The shooting took place in Washington, D.C., which boasts some of the most draconian gun control legislation in the nation, and within a military facility on which civilians are prohibited from carrying firearms. If restrictive laws actually worked to prevent mass shootings, Monday’s rampage would have never happened. Unfortunately, evil people will always find a way to achieve their sinister goal; and the best defense against such attacks is and always will be a strong defense.
Leftist intentions have never been about controlling guns, but about controlling those who wish to freely own them. The same crowd can be counted on to spew the same talking points after any terrible event involving a gun, despite the sheer fallacy of their argument. As America’s thoughts should be with Alexis’ victims and their families, it remains politics as usual on the radical left.
