Though one might imagine environmental extremists make up a group likely to make personal sacrifices to reduce the threat they believe is imminent, a recent U.K. study indicates the opposite is true.
According to a government study conducted by university experts, those who identify as the most concerned about climate change also consume the most electricity.
The results came after a number of residents were asked their opinion regarding the statement: “The effects of climate change are too far in the future to really worry me.”
Those who expressed the least worry, subsequent research found, were also the most frugal energy consumers in the study.
“Taken all together,” the report found, “householders who strongly agreed they were not worried about climate change because it was too far in the future in fact used less electricity rather than more, counter to the hypothesis that households concerned about climate change use less electricity.”
Results were based on monitoring of participants’ energy usage over the span of one year.
Researchers did offer a caveat in an attempt to explain the discrepancy.
“However,” the report continued, “we found this was largely due to the effect of age, as older households were much more likely to agree with this statement, and also had lower energy consumption.”
The study’s own findings, however, provided little justification for this argument.
“When we separated the pensioner households from the younger ones,” researchers wrote, “there was no significant relationship between this statement and energy use in the pensioner group, and only a weak trend among younger households.”
Regardless of the age factor, however, critics conclude that those who are purportedly wrought with concern over the environment could gain credibility by taking the very steps they claim would lessen the threat global warming poses. Anything less strikes many as disingenuous.
“The survey exposes the hypocrisy of many who claim to be green,” said Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee member Peter Lilley. “The greater the concern people express about global warming the less they do to reduce their energy usage.”
