ESPN Pulls Hank Williams for Exercising Free Speech that Opposes Obama

Keach Hagey, Politico.com

Hank Williams Jr., the voice famous for asking millions of viewers if they’re ready for some football, has been pulled from Monday’s broadcast of “Monday Night Football” over a comment he made on Fox News this morning…

This afternoon, ESPN released a statement to the affirmative:

“While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.”

During its live broadcast, ESPN avoided any mention of Williams’s remarks…ESPN didn’t entirely avoid mention of the story; its website ran an article covering both the decision to remove Williams and his controversial remarks.

  1. mythoughts says:

When your bribed with taxpayers money the only thing left is to boycott ESPN!

    • yalonda Sconyers says:

I agree with you completely……..seems if you speak out against this administration they use their power to force silence including most of the TV networks who mostly seem to be puppets of the Obama bunch of thugs. If this country doesn't wake up we will not have any rights before long. Most news channels feed us ———by the spoon full every day and think people believe they are just giving us the facts…..Right ! What a load of BULL. Wake up America. Hank Williams Jr. has a right to speak his mind just like Obama speaks his.

  2. Ron Powell says:

I can live without ESPN. When they start censoring people for something they said on another network then it’s time we started fighting back. As far as I’m concerned this is still a free country regardless of what Obama and his henchmen think. I’ll pass this on to all my email contacts.

    • alegalcitizen says:

I already did this, along with sending an email telling them that I was voicing my right to FREE SPEECH by letting them know exactly how I felt about them due to their actions against Hank Williams.

    • Steve Chandler says:

Thanks. Just used it to send out to people to voice their support for ESPN's decision to pull the drunk

      • Well well, and who is the drunk here?
Get lost! Hank Wiliams Jr. spoke for me and every American, drunk or sober. Fox news went the way of CBS on this deal.

  4. ESPN has no right to let Hank Williams Jr. go because they don't believe in free speech. I will never watch ESPN again or watch sports or listen to it on any channel at all. These idiots are all in with Obama and goose step to whatever he tells them. This is America you idiots so act like you are Americans! I don't care what Obama says or what he thinks he is. He is nothing to me and don't deserve the respect of Americans. He and his minions are the cause of what is going on in America today and in East Asia. He knows exactly what he is doing and you idiots are dumb enough to follow along. Obama is a big disgrace and a huge mistake.

    • Richard Carroll says:

Not only do that, but stop buying from their SPONDSERS. Boycott everything that has to do with that show. The networks don't care what you do, it's the spondsers that will lose the money.

  6. Roger Ailes apparently gave an interview in which he said that he was going to bring Fox news back from the (far right)? and back to the center! It never was far right to begin with, but apparently all Fox employees have their marching orders, to be more subdued and not take on Hussain and the democrats! Williams is absolutely right in what he said. If you have any knowledge of Nazi Germany, you can compare what Hitler did to Germany with what Hussain is doing to this country! The comparisons are all there to see. ____ Now there is no news chanel left to watch that is kissing Hussain's azz! Right now there is only the internet which is being taken over next month by the fairness doctrine enforced by the fcc! Then just think, we won't be able to hear anything but propaganda.

  7. this just goes to show that if your not a lib you can't say what you feel

  8. Betsy K. Larsen says:

I have never been a fan of his music, but I will rethink my thoughts, and learn to like it and him, in the bargin! Just because he said what I have thought and said myself, that this freak who now infects our country is so like HITLER! You go Hank, tell it like it is, and don’t cave to the pressure! He always asked if we were “ready for some football”, I have never been ready for it myself, it’s too much like a “religion” to suit me………….but, I am ready for some TRUTH and for some folks who have the BALLS to speak their minds, and be honest about it, and get their lips unglued from this half and half black/white azz! From here on in, I think I will get myself some of his music, support him, if I can’t support the infection in office, who has so infected every part and parcel of this country! God bless America, and God bless Hank, the Country Boy Who Can Survive! If he stands firm, he can SURVIVE this attack on his name, his good name, by the way!!!!!!

  9. Ralph Kautz. says:

Obumbler is acting like Tricky Dicky and thinks he is Gods superium voice on Earth Espn probubly was treatened by Obumbler using the FCC the way Tricky Dicky useed the IRS.Congress needs to investage this and see if it is another Watergate likev Moument.Seems like the Liberals and Obumbler want to Unconstitutionaly do away with free speech.

  10. SEAN MURRY says:

The gestpo is alive and well.

  11. You have to remember ESPN is owned by ABC who are in bed with O'Vomit

    • The blond on Fox news made sure Fox news wasn’t going too stand behind Hank Williams Jr. 60 minites went this way with a whiltle blower and has never been the same.
Obama and the Mulism Communists draw a lot of water in this country.
I will stand on my FREE SPEECH RIGHTS as Hank Williams Jr. did.

  12. what happened to freedom of speech, oh thats right only the liberals can say what they want and get away with it . cant go both ways freedom of speech even if it something you dont want to hear. as per pres busch after the dixie chicks commented on him, thats why we are the usa freedom of speech no matter what is said. grow a backbone you crybabys.

  13. ESPN needs to grow up and realize that everyone has a right to freedom of speech, whether or not others are in agreement. To pull Hank Williams' opening song for Monday night football is petty and, to many of us, controversial. He has a right to say what he thinks. I find ESPN offensive for being so narrow-minded, and will not watch their programming any longer. I have already stopped viewing ABC since they mandated their employees not be allowed to wear lapel flag pins because "some people" find it offensive – offensive to whom? This is America, for Christ's sake, and so be it. The flag is our heritage, and if "some people" find it offensive, send them packing back to their country of origination. And don't let them back in these wonderful United States of America!

    • Sandi, once again another ignorant comment. Hank Williams expressed his right to speak freely, and ESPN executives expressed their right as a non-government entity to fire him. The First Amendment only protects free speech from government intrusion. Please read the Constitution before invoking freedom of speech.

  14. HELLO HANK, – WAKE UP AMERICA – GOODBYE ESPN – THIS IS MY THOUGHT – AMERICAN HAS FREE SPEEACH , SOMETIMES IT HITS HOME, SO MAY OUR GOD LEAD US AND TAKE CHARGE OF ALL OUR WORLDLY EVILS, AND GOD BLESS AMERICAN FOR WHICH WE USE TO STAND!!!!!!!!! AND HOPE TO DO AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Apparently freedom of speech is only for those who like or owe Obama for their jobs. I also think those in office presently should be ashamed to allow this interdiction of a persons right to tell his side on TV or any other media. That Obama is compared to HItler is a fact and lots of people do it everytime he makes a speech or sends money to foreign countries and lets the US citizens do without. We cant fly the flag any more, or mention GOD in public, and now we cannot speak our feelings against dictatorship.
I will watch ESPN again to find out who sponsors ESPN, then I choose to not buy those products ever again.
    Obama is killing AMERICA.

  16. ESPN. . it is over for you and me!

Have you read this true narrative? Maybe Hank Jr. got the same E-mail?

I was born in one country, raised in another.

My father was born in another country.

I was not his only child.

He fathered several children with numerous women.

I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me.

My mother died at an early age from cancer.

Although my father deserted me and my mother raised me, I later wrote a book idolizing my father not my mother.

Later in life, questions arose over my real name.

    My birth records were sketchy.

No one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.

I practiced non-traditional beliefs and didn't follow Christianity, except in
    the public eye under scrutiny.

I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them.

That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and embarked on a new career.

I wrote a book about my struggles growing up.

It was clear to those who read my memoirs, that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.

I became active in local politics in my 30's then, with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s.

They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything.

I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no
experience in leading a single organization.

Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me, as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks.

I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances.

    This bolstered my ego.

At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy…

I was very critical of my country in the last war, and seized every
    opportunity to bash my country.

But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy..

I pretended to have a really good plan on how we could do better, and every poor person would be fed and housed for free.

I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess.

It was the free market, banks and corporations.

I decided to start making citizens hate them and, if they became envious of
others who did well, the plan was clinched tight.

    I called mine "A People's Campaign".

That sounded good to all people.

I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics and was able to gain
    Widespread popular support.

I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope', together we could change our country and the world.

So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities".

My true views were not widely known and I kept them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader.

I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out
what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined
those people associated with. I'm glad they didn't.

Then I became the most powerful man in the world.

And then world learned the truth.

    Who am I?

    ADOLPH HITLER

If you were thinking of SOMEONE ELSE, you should be scared, very scared!

  17. But it was OK for Bush to be called Hitler?? Double-standard!

  18. NELSON DOBBINS says:

I AM BOYCOTTING ESPN!!! IT NO LONGER IS A PART OF MY HOUSHOLD!!!!! HANK WILLIAMS HAS A RIGHT TO HIS OPINION!!!! FREE SPEECH YOU ESPN IDIOTS!! BY CANCELLING HIS SONG, YOU BROUGHT MORE ATTENTION TO HIS COMMENTS!!!!! FOR THAT I'M GRATEFUL, BUT YOU SHOULD'VE STAYED OUT OF POLITICS ESPN. YOU REPRESENT SPORTS. MEN AND WOMEN PLAYING CHILDREN'S GAMES. GET OUT OF POLITICS!!!!

  19. My husband and I sent an e-mail to ESPN to notify them we will no longer be watching their channel! I ended it with saying…SEE YA…..NOT!!!! Hank is a GREAT American!!!!! We support his right to FREEDOM of SPEECH!!!!

  20. Give 'em hell, Bocephus!

  21. What ever happened to free speech, especially when it is true

  22. As long as they won't allow Hank Williams Jr to be a part of Monday Night Football. You can bet your bottom dollar that I for One Will be Boycotting EVERY Monday Night Football game without Him. Just WHO do THEY think they ARE? THEY can say Anything they want about TEA Parties OR Any other Patriotic Group and NEVER suffer ANY Consequences. HANK WILLIAMS JR. "IS" Monday Night Football !

  23. Well, screw ESPN – they are just as liberal and progressive as NBC. It seems they have overlooked or forgotten about the First Amendment.. I wonder who they will get to replace Hank – maybe Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson doing some hip hop.

  24. alegalcitizen says:

People should send emails, or call ESPN & VOICE your FREE SPEECH by letting them know how you disapprove of their actions against Hank Williams. I just did, so should you.

  25. Maybe the Black Panthers can do a better job! Goodbye ESPN.

  26. Kevin Miller says:

Like other leftist companies,ESPN(Establisment for Socialist Proggressive Nazis) do not believe in Free Speech when a Conservative is talking(and telling the Truth)about the evil S.O.B oBUMa is! But if he said the same thing about Pres.Bush,he'd be given a raise.Liberals are 2 Faced Hypocrites!

  27. All this time I thought Zero was just a Marxist, Progressive, Liberal, Communist, Dictatorial, Anarchist, worthless, piece of lowlife Kenyan crap. Now Hitler needs to be added, I am running out of adjectives to describe this Prick.

  28. Edwardkoziol says:

I hope ESPN goes off the ai rand I add my name to the list of people who will quit watching ESPN.Beside today all announcers don't just broadcast the game they give you all their opinions and if your Cam Fig Newton of the panthers holy shit thats all they talk about if he was white he'd be just another qback,Vick the dog killer is another one.He loses and the white annoucer can't wait to kiss his ass. It's to bad God can't bring those dogs back to haunt him till he croaks.

  29. Oh POO POO. He was just exercising his right to free speech. Boy howdy! I was wondering where those people on ESPN got their brown noses! Now I know…..

  30. Dorothy Heath says:

Hank stick in there and fight this absurd pulling of your opening from monday night football ! Yo have a right to your opinion ! This isnt a Communist country yet!!Remember your song 'ACountry Boy CanSurvive"!!!!!

  31. Richard Carroll says:

What ever happened to Freedom of Speech? He is not saying anything we all have been saying. Get him out of the White House.

  32. Anyone catch the story of Hank Williams Jr comparing Obama to Hitler??? They pulled his Monday Night Football song because of it….. apparently someone got offended! I am sure he didnt mean to offend any Hitler supporters!_

  33. well hank wussed out says i'm sorry

  34. The truth should not be apologized for, no matter how many it offends, Hank should have held his ground.

  35. Obama is not U.S. Born Obama is biggest Sucker lair I do not have no respect that man Obama,is biggest fox lair.

  36. Everyone who mentions free speech when talking about this issue is an idiot. Have you ever read the First Amendment? The First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech." The First Amendment protects freedom of speech from government intrusion. There were no government intrusion here. Hank WIlliams expressed to use Hitler in comparison to Obama, and the executives at ESPN expressed their right to fire Williams for his comments. You can have an opinion as to whether ESPN made the right decision, but talking about this issue while mentioning free speech rights is ignorant and unpatriotic. If you claim to be a patriot, please understand what you're talking about first.

  37. Seem that the only ones that are allowed freedom of speach on ESPN are the announcers and when they open their mouths you automatlcaly know that they are dumber than bucket of rocks..

  38. RON RILEY says:

GARY YOU ARE SO RIGHT> OBAMA IS NO GOOD< NOT BECAUSE HE IS BLACK. HE IS A LYING SON OF A BIT++ WHO IS DOI NG HIS BEST TO DESTROY AMERICA
