Congressman Goes For Obama’s Throat Over VA Scandal

The latest controversy to rock the Obama administration involves the tragic deaths of numerous veterans who were forced to wait for treatment at various Veterans Administration hospitals across the nation. Though a VA official – who was set to exit the agency later this year anyway – has since resigned, many contend much more needs to be done to rectify the situation.

Republican Rep. Steve Stockman is one of a growing number of voices insisting Barack Obama share in the blame for this unconscionable mistreatment of American veterans.

“New revelations that President Barack Obama has known since 2008 about delayed care and record falsification at Veterans Administration facilities, but did nothing even as veterans died, call into question his personal role in the scandal,” the Texas conservative asserted in a recent press release.

Stockman went on to call into question the claims by administration sources that Obama is working hard to get to the bottom of this scandal. He cited White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough’s comments this weekend indicating Obama initiated a full-scale investigation upon learning of the delays.

“McDonough’s comments would make it seem Obama learned of the scandal at the same time as the rest of us, is not aware of its nature, and quickly took action,” Stockman continued. “None of that is true. Obama knew. Obama knew for over five years. And Obama chose to do nothing even as veterans continued to die.”

His tough rhetoric is backed up by other media reports released this week.

“We also learned today some veterans allegedly committed suicide rather than wait for care,” Stockman lamented, citing the testimony of a VA hospital doctor in West Virginia.

“That is at least 42 recorded deaths linked to VA delays since Obama was told of the problem,” he added. “Obama continued to ignore the rising death toll until it was publicly exposed. Only then did he claim to be ‘madder than hell’ and took action, which he should have done over five years ago.”

In the end, Stockman called for a congressional inquiry into what Obama knew, when he knew it, and what actions he immediately took.

“If President Obama knew about the delays and record falsification and did nothing even as veterans died,” he concluded, “it would be a serious breach of trust and violation of his duty. The White House must cooperate with Congress to fully investigate this fatal scandal and hold accountable to the fullest extent of the law anyone whose negligence resulted in the deaths of veterans.”
