Conservative parents across the nation recognize the increased influence America’s public school system has over their children’s lives. Instead of focusing on necessary skills and subjects, federal mandates and the oft-maligned Common Core curricula are primarily concerned with indoctrinating the next generation with leftist propaganda.
Even as a growing number of parents are discovering this painful truth, some of Common Core’s most ardent backers are doing little to assuage their fears.
During a recent panel discussion on the program, former Massachusetts Education Sec. Paul Reville criticized those who prefer local educational oversight as opposed to a one-size-fits-all federal mandate.
“To be sure,” he said, “there’s always a small voice … of people who were never in favor of standards in the first place and never wanted to have any kind of testing or accountability and those voices get amplified.”
He mocked the “fringe voices about federalism and states’ rights,” disparaging what he calls a “tiny minority” that believe Washington, D.C. should not be the origin of every child’s education.
In a forced defense of his position, Reville said “the children belong to all of us”; therefore, they should all receive the same cookie-cutter education. Of course, the obvious benefit for the radial partisans who support Common Core is that all children will be subjected to the blatant leftist bias included in these educational standards.
While Reville and other Common Core proponents cite the program’s supposed high standards, those with an intimate knowledge of its disastrous lessons suggest otherwise.
The Heritage Foundation’s Lindsey Burke, for example, has studied Common Core proposals extensively and presents the program as woefully inadequate to prepare students for the real world.
“These are not the hallmarks of a ‘state-led’ process,” she explained. “Moreover, these are not high standards.”
Instead, she continued, “Common Core removes the ability of parents and teachers to direct academic content and will have a homogenizing effect on the educational choices available to families.”
In addition to a shift away from critical thinking and literature, these standards often subject students to a one-sided, leftist view of history and current events. Stifling students’ ability to think independently and supplementing their education with partisan propaganda is the quickest way to create a malleable and controllable generation.
