Change Of Heart? Lerner Set To Testify On IRS Scandal

After asserting her Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination during an earlier hearing, former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner is now reportedly willing to testify regarding the agency’s targeting of conservative groups and individuals.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa confirmed her scheduled appearance in a Fox News interview Sunday.

He added that Lerner’s cooperation would be “in her best interest,” noting his committee has compiled significant evidence in its ongoing investigation into the IRS scandal.

In addition to her silence as a witness, Lerner ultimately resigned from the agency amid growing pressure for accountability within the IRS.

“It’s going to be a good, fact-finding hearing,” he said, indicating the testimony could take place as early as Wednesday.

The same day, however, Lerner’s attorney, William Taylor, told Politico that his client “intends to continue to assert her Fifth Amendment rights.”

He expressed confusion regarding “why Issa said what he said.”

Further confusing the issue, Issa produced written confirmation from Taylor that Lerner would indeed be willing to testify; however, she is likely to ask for a delay of at least a week.

Spokesperson Frederick Hill said the House Oversight Committee has “informed Mr. Taylor that Ms. Lerner may make her request for a delay on Wednesday when she appears for the hearing.”

Lerner was heading the tax-exempt division of the IRS during the period in which conservative groups were reportedly subjected to invasive and unnecessary scrutiny. According to Issa, she “could have been acting alone.”

Her apparent reversal stands in contrast to Taylor’s assertion just last week that she would only testify if a federal court mandated her appearance or if she received immunity.

Whether she actually testifies Wednesday or seeks a delay, her ultimate testimony will hopefully provide some useful information in the continuing search for truth within a federal agency riddled with controversy. While her behavior certainly indicates some level of involvement in the scandal, Lerner’s account of the targeting within her division could shed light on the scope of the illicit program and identify precisely who participated in calling the shots.

As is so often the case within today’s corrupt political climate, however, those at the top level of involvement might never face the justice they deserve.

Her lawyers claim that Issa put out a false statement. The only way to get this ugly chunky bitch to testify is to have John Boner get a special committee up who has supeona power but chicken shit Boner won't do it.

The IRS Inspector General report showed that Lerner had been lying, and that she herself had actually been aware of the IRS scandal since 6/29/11. Obama lied about when he first knew about this. Progressive groups being flagged is false, because what conservative groups went through was nothing like what the liberal groups went through. Playing partisan politics with the tax code is about as constitutionally troubling as it gets (don’t pay your taxes). This was clearly a tactic designed to neutralize the Tea Party movement in the middle of a presidential election. Emails reveals that Lois Lerner and four other senior IRS officials were discussing the 501(c)4 regulations in June 2012 in the run-up to the 2012 elections. We are supposed to believe that these “missteps” were shear “boneheaded decisions, (“not a smidgen of corruption”)” to quote obama on O’Reilly. Emails show that IRS officials were focusing on the “media attention” received by these cases, and factoring that into their treatment of political groups. “Cindy: Please let ‘Washington’ know about this potentially politically embarrassing case involving a ‘Tea Party’ organization,” starts one email on Feb 25, 2010 from Sharon L. Camarillo. “Recent media attention to this type of organization indicates to me that this is a ‘high profile case.’” So not only was Washington looped in early on, it was for political considerations—and free speech was damaged as a result. “From then on applications were routed through the offices of Mrs. Lerner and long approval delays ensued.” How much “boneheadedness (IRS corruption)” are the American people supposed to accept (before they stop paying taxes)? Add to this that obama has assigned a Department of Justice official, Barbara Bosserman, to look into these issues—a woman who has given the DNC and his campaigns a combined total of $6,750. “The INJustice Department contends that there was nothing improper about naming Bosserman to lead the investigation and that taking her political leanings into account would have been inappropriate.” But clearly, that is exactly what they did—they took her political leanings into account—just like they did with the targeted groups. How ironic. And it is paying off. As Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) pointed out, none of the 41 clients represented by The American Center for Law and Justice who are suing the IRS over its actions “had been interviewed by any of the 13 INJustice Department investigators during the six months of the investigation.” Abuse of power and lying to the American people are forms of corruption. And now obama has stepped in and perhaps prejudiced an ongoing investigation—a sham investigation at that—by saying there isn’t even “a smidgen of corruption” in this case. Even if there is no controlling legal authority to prosecute and punish people for these acts, and media refuse to call it what it is, this ongoing IRS corruption and cover-up is a serious Obama scandal mostly against the tea party! Never give up, never surrender!
