AZ Governor: ‘Dang It, The Federal Government Has Got A Job To Do!’

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and Department of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson toured the Nogales Processing Center on Arizona’s border with Mexico on Wednesday.  Thousands of families and unaccompanied children have been making their way to the U.S. to escape the violence of criminal gangs in Central America.

After touring the facility that is housing 900 children, Governor Brewer told reporters that she has a lot questions about how this humanitarian crisis is going to be handled by the federal government; and she says she’s getting very few definite answers.  She was particularly frustrated with the reassignment of Border Patrol Agents to act as child care providers rather than to secure the border to begin with. “They brought in about 140 additional Border Patrol.  I indicated at that point in time that I thought it might have been a good idea to maybe add those Border Patrol here earlier in an effort to secure our border rather than have them here to take care of these children in a humanitarian manner.”

The Republican Governor, whose term is ending this year, continued with her criticism of the administration: “Dang it, the federal government has got a job to do.  Unfortunately in Arizona, I got sued by the federal government to do their job, and lost.”

Many undocumented women and children who illegally crossed the border into Texas have been dropped off at bus stations in Phoenix and Tucson with the expectation of reporting back to I.C.E. within 15 days.  Immigration officials have declined to answer how many of these immigrants have actually checked back in.

If Gov. Brewer was really concerned about the invasion into her state, she would put those children back on the bus and send the bus back across the border to Mexico.
