When Was It A Good Idea For A Senator To Run For President?

To date, sixteen senators have also served as president of the United States. Three senators–Warren G. Harding, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama–moved directly from the U.S. Senate to the White House. All three moved up since the passage of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution:

 17th Amendment Section 1.

The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

While this simple amendment seems very democratic and harmless enough, the full intent was to destroy states’ rights so the Senators no longer served as effective lobbyists for the interests of the state legislatures that once elected them.

The method of representation of all too many Senators, with respect to their states’ interests, has produced utter chaos by striving to fulfill the “progressive” agenda. In effect, this reduced the number of potential managerially–qualified Presidential candidates by 2/3rds. Even the excellent Republican Senators that are at the top of the popular list have to overcome the handicap of being Senators under the 17th Amendment. This can be dealt with: www.articlevprojecttorestoreliberty.com

The frustration of California farmers and voters over the malfeasance of Senator Barbara Boxer – not to mention two Democrat Congressmen — shows on a highway sign that pleads to stop Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, and Congressman Jim Costa. Since the San Joaquin Valley of California produces a significant amount of our national and world food supply, this denial of water to a normally arid and fertile valley is criminal and even treasonous.

State governors, due to the requirements of their office, come better prepared for the business and human contact aspects of the Presidency. They are also conditioned to seek solutions to problems. State legislators are elected by their district constituencies and are responsible to them. The Governor manages the interests of all subject to the legislature. The Senator is obligated to represent the state government’s interests at the nation’s capital – except under the 17th Amendment.

A Governor or a Senator who has the experience of representing the state’s interests could make an excellent Presidential candidate from either party. By Senators, as members of a tight club with little interest in their state’s needs, they easily become victims to the siren call of the “progressive” who has no respect for the sanctity of human life or the nation and its Constitution. Liberal or conservative, the “progressive” philosophy benefits no one save human greed. Like the 17th Amendment, they consistently violate the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity leading to selfishness and dependency.

Politics As Usual, Or Spiritual Warfare?

Well-meaning statesmen and politicians strive mightily for political solutions such as an Israel-Palestine accord – or moving the Muslim Brotherhood to “democracy.” They are living in a fool’s paradise. Islam’s hatred of the USA and Israel is not political; it’s spiritual at its very core. Political solutions have yet to work; but like insanity, we keep doing the same thing over again.

The West has strangely dug itself into a deep hole by denying Christianity, creating an enormous spiritual vacuum. It denies what created its beauty and prosperity. Russia is trying to sort out its renaissance – choosing between her once lost beauty or power unleashed. China has found itself the largest beneficiary of American companies selling out their own customers by removing their opportunities to learn, innovate, work, earn, and buy – trading “Yankee ingenuity” for a “Yangtze ingenuity” that is devoid of human or environmental stewardship (or compassion.) Now politicians talk about “creating jobs!”

While the West plays politics against the powers of evil within and without, its spiritual vacuum is being filled with two competing (yet complicit) forces. One is Islam, its rules of law an absolute counter to history’s freest economic/human accomplishment system. Islam only evangelizes by the edge of the scimitar, the bomb vested jihadist who seeks an eternal reward, and a highly developed spiritual malady of lying. Its masses wallow in poverty and fear, while the rulers live grand lifestyles.

The other is “Eugenic progressivism,” which has no care or concern for the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. Its extremes look to a world population reduced to 500 million, human experimentation in the lab, and new ways to eliminate the unwanted. The current scandals at the Veterans Administration hospitals are not just poor administration, but part of the intended spiritual corruption of our health care system to achieve eugenic goals with a minimum of resistance.

Our only hope is to regain the spiritual roots so beautifully given us in the US Declaration of Independence, coupled with the Ethics of her Constitution and the protective Logic of her Bill of Rights. With one exception, adherents of nearly all the world’s races and religions have found a safe home in the United States with its predominantly Christian foundations. America is far from perfect, but nowhere on earth can freedom and liberty be found on such a broad human scale.

The war against these foundations has been waged for over 100 years by “eugenic progressivism” and its money manipulators. In recent years, the war has been joined by Islamic radicals with their jihad against all they see as infidels – including competing Islamic sects, but especially “The Great Satan” of individual liberty and Israel. They compete to dominate a one world government – fascist/communist or supreme caliphate. Neither bodes well for the human race.

If complete lack of respect for human life and the hope of eternal reward for murdering innocents isn’t spiritual warfare, please explain what political strategy will drive out the demons of the culture of death? Just ask your local jihadist or eugenicist. They can both be found crawling around the halls of government, wearing suits and ties and living grand lifestyles. These are the very halls where freedom must ring.

The Tea Party Is Dead? Could Have Fooled Me…

In April 2010, Fox News.com featured an article by a supposed marketing genius who believes the Tea Party movement will not survive because it lacks a marketing plan and a cohesive central command.  From Fox: “John Tantillo is a marketing and branding expert who markets his own services as ‘The Marketing Doctor.’ He writes frequently for Fox News Opinion and is author of “People Buy Brands, Not Companies.”

Tantillo doesn’t seem to understand the combined principles of subsidiarity and solidarity – personal responsibility and “e pluribus unum.” A “cohesive central command” only yields a Karl Rove type operation – good as far as it goes, but not good enough for e pluribus unum.

Soviet-style central planners like the intelligent but intuitively dull (and sad) White House and federal bureaucrats will never get it. They just can’t grasp that there’s more to marketing than cute, 2,000 page bills full of rules and regulations. It’s a perpetual power lust despots have always had.

When I picked up a can of Chinese–produced peaches in Bakersfield, part of the “Breadbasket of the World,” I took an engineering viewpoint – What did it take in human skills, materials, water, production equipment, plant facilities, agronomics, personnel, and transportation to put that can on my grocer’s shelf?

The Tea Parties are more aware of the diverse gifts, talents, desires, and assets it requires putting a product on the shelf, even a can of peaches! How many are victims of EPA overreach? It’s far too complicated for a “progressive” totalitarian mindset to grasp.

While they are real human challenges, race and ethnicity are not complete definitions of diversity. Just like the can of peaches, it takes a myriad of God-given gifts and talents, plus a grand sense of stewardship of the Earth. These include subduing her raw materials into usable crops, equipment, and components that put men and women to work in widely diverse ways to match their widely diverse God-given gifts and talents – especially if they have the opportunity to share in the rewards of personal stewardship. That is what most folks call free enterprise, anathema to White House operatives, jihadists, and all too many “progressive” legislators.

As Tantillo says in his book title, “People buy brands, not companies.”  The Tea Party brand is all about the “company” – the Constitutional Republic the Founders gave us – if we can keep it. Like well prepared food, all races and ethnic groups are welcome to enjoy the brand. If they do, we’ll all be able to pursue happiness as they buy into “the company.” Now let’s see if there’s enough intelligence in our Two-Party system to buy the “brand.”

The “Dirty Job” Mike Rowe Missed

Mike Rowe, the star of “Dirty Jobs” (the long running series on the Discovery Channel”, sought out and performed a huge variety of jobs that actually got his hands – and the rest of him – dirty. He showed what others do every day to keep the country running with plenty of food, fiber, and mobility.

Mike was seen on a dairy farm shoveling cow manure, inside an Air Force transport plane fuel tank, in factories and farms cleaning out sumps, and in slaughter houses dealing with offal, crawling into places that a claustrophobic (not homophobic) like me would panic in. I only saw him really scared once – but he did the chore anyway.

Mike found a way to put his delightful, clean-cut guy personality to work in a profitable manner. His underlying goal was to demonstrate to the rest of us what it takes to keep our farms, factories, and cities running – and introduce us to the people who step up to the plate to get the job done day after day so the rest of us can buy our food and clothing, flush our toilets, and forget about it.

Today, Mike is putting his experience to work, showing us that a truly diverse society requires truly diverse gifts, talents, and opportunities to keep things humming. Back in the 1970’s, when the same elitists were panicking over a global freeze, someone got the bright idea that ours was going to become an “Information Society” – thriving on virtual bullcrap, letting other lesser peoples in third world countries do the dirty work of making things for us while we all became college graduates.

Every nation has a population full of potential to discover and apply individual gifts and talents. Most of the world’s population lives under despots or conditions where it is impossible for those talents to be discovered, much less developed and put to use for the good of all. We were doing a pretty good job of teaching American methodologies so others could grow until greed enticed all too many companies to pick up entire factories and move them to cheap labor and lax safety and environmental requirements.

The elitists – mostly in Academia – were really big on every kid going to college–and every dirty job being left to someone else far, far away (even motherhood.) My son was in college when his wife became pregnant; so naturally, she went to the university health center. The knot head nurse said, “You’re not going to keep “IT” are you?” “IT” is 25 years old, a college graduate, and still looking for a well-paying job. Where have the jobs and the developed skills to support them gone? Go figure!

Academia was once the home of broad discourse and the building of young minds as they discover themselves and eternal truths, and seek ways to maximize their potential. Young people almost universally seek ways to do a real service to family, community, and the world in general while prospering personally. Fox example, the Scientific Method was born at the Cathedral School at Chartres in the 12th Century.

Cesar Chavez, An American Hero, And Mothers Against Chavez

I just read a review of the new movie “Cesar Chavez, an American Hero.”  From it, I got the idea it was more about family background and the usual conflicts when a parent is off on a crusade. The rest of the movie is reported to follow the timeline of progress of the United Farm Workers as it grew to over 350,000 members.

I was on the Board of Christian Family Renewal after the Delano Grape Boycott. My wife and I also had a TV show on the local CBS TV station called “The News Firm,” where she interviewed guests and I reported on current events from a Christian viewpoint.

During that time, I got a call from a Delano Grape grower who wanted to support our politico/religious program. We went to his home and sat down over a cup of coffee. His only condition? “Tell everyone what a dirty SOB the Bishop (Donahue) was.” We declined the opportunity – even though the growers were largely Catholic being pitted against a largely Catholic workforce by Marxists, church leaders, and Democrats. We even got a call of enthusiastic support for our show from then Auxiliary Bishop Roger Mahony, later Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angeles.

I still have mixed emotions about Cesar, as I believe his heart was right. His getting sucked in with Dolores Huerta for training by communist community organizer Fred Ross in New Mexico may have changed his outlook.

Jump ahead to 2007-2009, when my wife ran St. Faustina’s Maternity Home in Bakersfield. We lived in a small apartment attached to the house. We tried to create a family with 13 girls, and ultimately their babies. Most girls were ones who made a mistake by giving up their mystery; others were street-smart and knew how to maximize their relationship with the welfare industry, including having more babies after leaving us.

Enter Irma Gabaldon, our best and most street-smart volunteer. Her family were farm laborers from Earlimart, north of Delano. She saved our bacon by cutting through the BS. Ultimately, one of the girls, after leaving us and the apartment(s) we arranged for her, ended up on the streets with her baby. Husband Anthony and Irma took in the little girl as foster parents and then adopted her after the birth-mom realized she was incapable. Unfortunately, Irma succumbed to cancer just over a year ago. During our visits, Anthony, also from Earlimart, mentioned his mother Josephine was the founder and head of “Mothers Against Chavez.” He gave me a picture of him and other kids and Moms in front of their chartered bus.

It was a dismal epoch in Delano, CA. The goal of the Delano Grape Boycott was to force unionization of the farm workers to improve their pay and working conditions while subjugating their employers.

The majority of the workers were Americans of Mexican descent, plus documented immigrants and illegals. They have a certain love of the soil and a sense of true beauty and artistry that benefitted California agriculture for generations. They could draw the best out of a grape vine or a fruit tree or make a broken-down tractor hum.

They are also Roman Catholic from the time Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in 1531 Mexico and freed them from the despotism of Aztec rulers. As many as 300,000 victims were sacrificed every year to Aztec gods until Our Lady fulfilled an ancient Aztec prophecy on the Hill of Tepeyac.

Working conditions and the treatment of employees varied with the nature and character of the farm owners, but they largely cared for their employees as much as any other employer. Sanitary conditions and other aspects of toiling in the hot sun have been vastly improved under pressure from the UFW. Many migrate north following the harvests each year, often making their lives difficult save for growers’ labor camps. Many of the growers are also Roman Catholic. Their Church leaders stood against them, adding to the chaos caused by well-trained and funded leftist community organizers.

The United Farm Workers was formed around Fred Ross’ Communist tactics taught to Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta when in New Mexico. Seeking union organization of the workers, the UFW was quickly embraced by Democrat politicians and church leaders of several denominations. They came by the busload from UFW headquarters, they marched, they threatened, and they carried banners of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Che Guevara.

The contrast between the freedom Christ Our Lady delivered and the mass-murdering Communist slavery of Che Guevara was not lost on Josephine Gabaldon.

Josephine from Earlimart, California, just north of Delano, organized a group of farm working mothers she called “Mothers Against Chavez.” As meetings were held in churches with special services and processions for the fledgling UFW, the Mothers tried to participate and express their feelings about the tactics of the UFW organizers. They were rebuffed and not even allowed in church halls. After all, the Kennedys and noted church leaders were on the side of the UFW. Leftist-defined Social Justice overcame Equal Justice.

Chavez and Huerta were showered with accolades so numerous it boggles the mind . In fact, the Obama Administration was lobbied by the UFW to posthumously present the late Fred Ross with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Mothers Against Chavez drew some financial support from a man who flew in on his Learjet, according to Josephine’s son Tony, who was 12 at the time and carrying a sign in the photo. A short time later, his jet crashed, killing all on board.

History has a strange way of working things out. Josephine’s “Hispanic Tea Party” – Mothers against Chavez, losing its benefactor in a plane crash–never succeeded in stopping the UFW as it grew to the joy of leftists and Democrats all the way to Washington, DC with millions of taxpayer dollars.

The UFW has failed to win repeated elections at farms and food processing plants, whose workers were well treated. UFW is now down to less than 5,000 members – a drop of over 98%. Dolores Huerta still receives accolades for service to humanity through her failed union – even named to the list of “Top 100 Women of the 20th Century.” Huerta has four displays honoring her achievements at the California State Museum. Josephine isn’t even a footnote.

George Soros is funding her Dolores Huerta Foundation to campaign for the Democrat-backed immigration reform bill drafted by his affiliates to foist an Obamacare-like bill on the American people. She’s been leading protest meetings in front of Kevin McCarthy’s office in Bakersfield. Not to be outdone, he’s also trying to destroy our oil industry by paying MoveOn.org to arrange anti-fracking protests.

You won’t find a word about Josephine Gabaldon, the God-fearing Founder of the Mothers Against Chavez. Maybe someday when we are free again under our Constitution, they’ll name a school or a boulevard for her. Her son Tony, who marched with her and saw the injustices of the left, is today a successful communications specialist and father of 4, including the little girl he and his now late wife adopted 5 years ago. He is a staunch Republican who cajoles his relatives and co-workers to wake up.
