Are premium cigars next on the federal government’s hit list?
You see, as part of the 2010 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has the authority “to regulate marketing and promotion of tobacco products and to set performance standards for tobacco products to protect the public health.”
Though the law does not automatically apply to cigars, the FDA can issue new regulations that make cigars subject to the law.
Boy, does that have premium cigar advocates worried.
They say the FDA could force cigar shops to keep cigars under lock and key — maybe even put them behind black curtains, where customers are not permitted to see or touch them.
They say marketing prohibitions could forbid them from handing out samples. Decorative artwork common to cigar boxes could be replaced with dire health warnings.
They say blended cigars could require FDA approval, ingredient disclosure and hefty FDA fees — which will drive costs through the roof.
I smoke a premium cigar maybe five or six times a year. Why? I don’t know. Maybe it’s the manly feeling I get when I see my breath billow out of me like a chimney.
Maybe I want to be in the company of legendary cigar smokers, such as Mark Twain, Winston Churchill and Art Rooney.
Maybe it’s just for the relaxation. There’s something calming about taking a slow, deep drag on a stogie. It’s like male yoga — for males who would never do yoga.
Sure, there are health risks to those who smoke cigars on a daily basis. Such smokers are more prone to cancer of the mouth and other maladies — and fully aware of the risk.
But moderate cigar smokers?
Unlike cigarette smokers, moderate cigar smokers don’t inhale the thick stogie smoke. They don’t become addicted to nicotine. And, at $10 a pop, premium cigars aren’t likely to end up in the hands of underage kids.
That’s why the typical cigar smoker is….

And how much money do each of these ridiculous acts cost the taxpayer? This act is just one reason for the downgrade this week. The gov't has no business sticking its nose in our business.
Bill Clinton knows a good cigar,or should I say Monica does?
I'm sure Monicas lips have been on Slicks cigars so she would be a good source to know a good cigar.
The WH needs to get out of our lives…..I don't need them to look after my health and tax my pleasure……
Since only rich people can afford these cigars he will try to tax them to death like he wants to tax the corporate jet people.Maybe he will confiscate them and give them to the poor like he wants to do with wealth.
SO. What I’d like to know is WHEN THE HELL DID IT BECOME “OBAMA’S AMERICA”???????! As of yet, I have seen no news conferences that stated such, nor any law come into effect to that horrendous thought! It is still OUR AMERICA, although, at the rate it’s going, before long, it will belong to China or someplace else……………I swear, this crap is never going to end, obutthead and then more obutthead, and his dreadful know nothing at all about the people he was elected, ELECTED to serve, not made KING OF THE LAND! And besides, how can any American allow these stupid laws to exist, denying the rights of we the people to do what we find enjoyment from? I know smoking is bad for me, but so is DRINKING! The smokes ruin the lungs, true. But booze, ALCOHOL, destroys the LIVER! Now, which one is the stupider? I quote the Bible here when I say that this bunch of commie/nazi dictators are “straining at gnats and swallowing camels”!!!!!! Care for my health? Oh give me a break! If EVER there was a lie perpetuated, that one has got to be the BIGGEST ONE OF ALL!!!!!!!
And to those of you who agree with this ban on all smoking……..BE VERY CAREFUL, as your RIGHTS TO DO THINGS UNHEALTHY, or those that are DECIDED FOR YOU TO BE UNHEALTHY, MAY BE NEXT! They are ALREADY COUNTING THE CALORIES THAT YOU EAT! Do you want them to next start telling you WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT EAT? Beleive me, given time and the power, they will, and then you can forget your Big Macs, Hot Dogs, at the ball games, French fries, milk shakes, Burger King Whoppers, and anything else that this COURT OF JESTERS DECIDE THAT THEY KNOW BEST FOR YOU ALL! GOD GAVE US THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE, AND THE KNOWLEDGE TO KNOW WHICH TO CHOOSE! IF WE make bad choices for ourselves, it is we who will pay and answer in the end for them. The only choice a smoker should make is whether to be polite and not offend someone with their smoke. And that applies to everything that can affect others. Consideration and moderation in all things applies, laws do not need to be made for these things.
