As Western Journalism reported, the Taliban’s release of American soldier Bowe Bergdahl has sparked widespread outrage regarding the deal that led to his return and statements he made just before he went missing.
Reports indicate Bergdahl deserted the Army after declaring his disdain for America. In facilitating his return, the Obama administration agreed to release five suspected terrorists from Guantanamo Bay without giving Congress a required notice of the transfer.
Accusations continue to circle the entire ordeal; and, as is often the case, much of the ongoing conversation is taking place via social media. A Facebook page dedicated to Bergdahl’s return has transitioned into a venue for heated discussion of the circumstances of his release.
Some commenters agree with Republicans who say trading one American for five Islamic radicals will only give terrorists more reason to take U.S. soldiers hostage.
A number of individuals who initially supported the page’s mission are now having second thoughts as troubling revelations continue to emerge.
While there are plenty of comments offering an in-depth, often profane response to what many contend is traitorous behavior, plenty of commenters are satisfied with offering a concise reaction.
The page, which is nearly five years old, has about 34,500 likes as of this writing. Other pages, including one called ‘Bowe Bergdahl is a Traitor,’ have already attracted nearly as much attention in just the past 48 hours.
Administrators of that page are sharing anonymous comments by self-identified soldiers who offer a glimpse into their knowledge of Bergdahl and the circumstances of his ostensible capture by the Taliban.
Comments on the page show an overwhelming shift in public sentiment regarding the prisoner.
Others suggest that, if Bergdahl had truly been captured as a prisoner, he would not have been treated so well.
For many, however, the entire narrative has created more questions than answers.
