Riding a campaign message of “forward” and overcoming a contentious first-debate debacle, President Obama secured a final four years in the White House by beating Republican challenger Mitt Romney Tuesday.
The race, according to most pundits, had been tightening for some time. Indeed, the nation’s first vote indicated as much. Tiny Dixville Notch, N.H., where voters take to the polls shortly after midnight and the result is immediately known, saw its first-ever tie in a general election presidential vote. Obama and Romney each received five votes — an outcome that seemed emblematic of the grueling campaign, which pundits for months have said favors Obama but remains too close to call.
